Hurricane Mitch was an extremely powerful, deadly and catastrophic tropical cyclone in 1998 that caused 11,374 fatalities in Central America, becoming the second-deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record. It was the deadliest hurricane in Central American history, surpassing Hurricane Fifi–Orlene, which killed slightly fewer people in the same area in 1974.

Three days after a surprise, but localized snow storm over northwest Oklahoma in 2019, a powerful cold front moved over the region and ushered in very cold air. As winds diminished on the 29th and 30th, Halloween morning saw some of the coldest temperatures ever recorded in Oklahoma during the month of October, and for that early in the season. Kenton dropped to zero degrees that day, besting the previous lowest October minimum of 3 degrees at Freedom from the 29th of October, 1993.
