Fire weather outlook
The Storm Prediction Center’s outlook for where wind and low humidity (elevated, critical, extremely critical) or lightning with little rain (dry thunderstorms) favor fires starting and spreading.
Today valid Sep 20, 7:00 AM CDT to Sep 21, 7:00 AM CDT
No area is in an elevated, critical or dry thunderstorm area.
Tomorrow valid Sep 21, 7:00 AM CDT to Sep 22, 7:00 AM CDT
No area is in an elevated, critical or dry thunderstorm area.
The forecaster’s discussion, today
NO CRITICAL AREAS
Synopsis
Weak mid-level troughing will continue across the central US today as a cold front sags southward across the central and southern Plains. Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorm activity is expected this morning through early Monday morning both along and north of the surface boundary. This should aid in some improvement of the critically dry fuels across much of the southern Plains. Overall, the increase in relative humidity and precipitation chances will keep fire weather concerns low.
Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches
A Red Flag Warning means warm temperatures, very low humidity and strong wind are expected or occurring together, so a fire that starts will spread quickly. A Fire Weather Watch means those conditions are possible in the next day or two.
None are in force right now.

Fires from the National Interagency Fire Center’s WFIGS incident records, updated as incident teams report. Fire weather outlook from NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center; Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches from the National Weather Service.
What is here
- Fires
- Every incident the interagency system lists as current, largest first, and a page for each fire reported since 2014: size, containment, cause, dates, the agencies managing it, and its mapped perimeter.
- Growth
- For fires since 2023, the area mapped at the end of each day, so the days a fire ran are plain to see.
- Fire weather
- The Storm Prediction Center's outlook for today and tomorrow, every Red Flag Warning and Fire Weather Watch in force, and for each active fire the wind, humidity and smoke forecast at the fire.
Common questions
Why do acres differ between sources?
Incident teams report a size on each update, and mappers draw a perimeter from infrared flights and satellite detections on their own schedule. The two agree once a fire is mapped, and can differ by a few percent while it is growing. The pages show the incident's reported size, and the perimeter's own mapped area beside it.
What do the fire weather outlook levels mean?
Elevated means dry, windy conditions that favor fire spread over an area. Critical means strong wind with very low humidity over dry fuels. Extremely critical is reserved for the most dangerous combinations. Dry thunderstorm areas mark lightning with little rain, which starts new fires.
