SUMMARY: The Timber Fire was discovered the afternoon of August 8, 2026, approximately 4 miles southeast of Big Sur, California. Currently, Southwest Complex Incident Management Team 1 is managing the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Much of the fire is burning in the footprint of the 2016 Sobranes Fire and firefighters are using a direct-extinguishment strategy that incorporates the use of several previously established fire lines as well as newly constructed lines and working directly along the fire’s edge where safe to do so to minimize potential growth. With incredibly steep and rugged terrain throughout the fire area, it is not safe for firefighters to engage much of the fire's edge directly so indirect lines have been constructed supported by fire hose lays. Firefighters have prepped structures and communities near the fire as a precaution. Helicopters are dropping water on hot spots and firefighters mopping up hot spots have increased the containment of the fire. Highway 1 is now open and travelers are asked to use caution as firefighters and heavy equipment are actively working along the highway.
