A short-lived tornado destroyed two brick homes and two mobile homes, and damaged at least another 15 homes and businesses. One lady broke her shoulder when the mobile home she was in flipped over, trapping her. The other two injuries were minor - cuts and bruises.
During an already very active month, the final storm of January left a considerable impact on many communities in Central California. An upper-level low pressure system dropped south along the California coast, kicking a low pressure system inland.

The tornado, which was on the ground for 10 miles (16 km), inflicted extensive damage to homes and businesses, reaching a maximum intensity of EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

The coldest month ever in Wichita Falls, and the fifth coldest January in Oklahoma City, was January 1978. An arctic front swept through Oklahoma and north Texas during the day on the 7th. Surges of even colder air would continue to plunge southward well into February. In fact, in Oklahoma City, the average daily temperatures would stay below average until the 24th of February, one of the longer such periods in Oklahoma City history.

Very cold air settled in over southeastern Wisconsin on January 25th and was a significant factor in the death of a 44-year-old women in the City of Kenosha. She died from exposure after her vehicle struck a tree.
A Duluth man died from hypothermia after leaving a bar during the early morning hours of the 25th. The temperature in Duluth was in the teens below zero with a wind chill of about 30 below zero.
