An isolated severe thunderstorm moved along the northeast portion of Oswego County. The initial damage from the storm, determined to be caused by strong thunderstorm winds, occurred in Texas where a large tree was blown onto a house.

Temperatures soaring into the lower 90s across much of Southeast Michigan set the stage for severe storms as a strong cold front dropped south into southern Lower Michigan. First round of storms developed near Saginaw Bay during the early afternoon hours.
A cold front was making its way across the state from the north and northwest and lit up in the afternoon around 4:30 pm to 5:00 pm just outside of the metro and progressed south and southeastward as isolated to multicell storms.

Hurricane Erin crossed the coast near Indian River Shores, FL as a category 1 hurricane, 75 kt (85 mph), central pressure 984 mb. Hurricane Erin was the first hurricane to strike the contiguous United States since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The fifth tropical cyclone, fifth named storm, and second hurricane of the unusually active 1995 Atlantic hurricane season, Erin developed from a tropical wave near the southeastern Bahamas on July 31.

Walnut size hail fell on the southeast side of Erie.
Thunderstorms developed over northern Cook county between 6 and 7 am on the morning of Thursday August 2nd. The storms slowly moved southeast across central and eastern Cook county. The thunderstorms began to move out of southern Cook county between 10 and 11 am.
Rains associated with distant Tropical Storm Barry in the Gulf of Mexico produced flooding across much of Martin County. About 13 inches of rain fell in the area between midnight and late morning on August 2nd.
A cluster of strong to severe thunderstorms moved into central and downtown El Paso from the south, dropping 1.5 to 2 inches of rain at the rate of an inch in 10 minutes on the southern spine of the Franklin Mountains.
Two to four inches of rainfall near the Village of Sells, caused several of the washes in the area to flood. A vehicle entered into the Artesa wash, which at the time was running very high with water, and became stuck.

Thunderstorms produced very heavy rain in west central Chaffee County. The hardest hit area was in and around Alpine. Mud flows from the south slope of Mt. Princeton were up to six feet deep...causing damage and destruction of roads and houses.
A warm front that moved northeast in the morning and a cold front that arrived from the west late in the day on the 2nd resulted in numerous showers and thunderstorms across the area with heavy rain and flash flooding.

8 train cars blown off the tracks while the train was moving from intense thunderstorm winds. One family was nearly "run over" by the derailing train cars. One boxcar ended up about 10 feet away from their vehicle. Winds were nearly 125 mph.
Calves killed...cars blown off the highway...a window was blown out of a pickup...60 power poles blown down...a large tree was uprooted in Belpre. The tree was Belpre's historic balsam fir tree, a landmark in the town for 108 years.
13 transformers damaged...97 power poles damaged near Trousdale...1 grain bin destroyed and 1 damaged.

Severe thunderstorms moving southwest across Louisiana blew down several trees and power lines around Charenton. A large blimp used in detecting drug smugglers was destroyed. The value of the blimp was $6 million.
Scattered thunderstorms pushed southeast across south-central Nebraska during the late evening hours. Strong winds and some hail accompanied the storms. A large tree limb fell on a roof in Hastings causing some minor damage.
Numerous trees down in north and northeast parts of Houston. One car struck by tree.
Downburst thunderstorm winds caused extensive tree damage in Sioux City. Large trees were uprooted, snapped, and stripped. A few vehicles were completely destroyed by the falling trees. Houses and other buildings, including a nursing home, were also damaged by trees and debris.
As a line of severe thunderstorms moved southeast, it produced high winds that downed many trees and power lines from Warwick northeast to Walden. Local newspapers reported that several trees were downed at Warwick High School and on the St. Stephen's Church and school grounds.

Five children and one adult were injured when winds, from a dry microburst, picked up an inflateable play house at Larimer County Reservoir. The wind swept up the house from its location on the beach, and knocked it into a steel pole before it came to a stop.

A 53 year-old man died in his Oklahoma City home due to the excessive heat.
An unseasonably warm and very humid air mass caused the deaths of two Philadelphia people on August 2nd. A 64-year-old male and a 74-year-old female died of heat related causes. One was in a nursing home where the air conditioning system was not working.
Female died of heat exposure in her home.
Another run of unseasonably hot weather affected eastern Pennsylvania from August 2nd through the 5th. High temperatures reached at least into the mid 90s each afternoon. The heat resulted in five more heat related deaths (4 in Philadelphia, 1 in Montgomery County).
Summer heat and monsoon humidity claimed a life.
A 47 year old railroad worker collapsed of heat exhaustion after working all day in the summer heat. Temperatures were in the upper 90s and heat indices were around 103. The man died shortly after being transported to a hospital.
A high pressure ridge at the surface and aloft was anchored across the southern plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley the last week of July into the first week of August.

Record high temperatures in the upper 90s and dewpoints in the low to mid 70s led to oppressive heat across Middle Tennessee on August 2. Two young children reportedly died of heat stroke after being left inside a vehicle for several hours in Rutherford County.
It was a very warm start to August in 2012 for Wichita Falls, Texas and much of the region. From July 31 through August 2, record high temperatures were broken each day at Wichita Falls. The record numbers ranged from 110 to 112 degrees.
