The second week of January 2008 was quite active with respect to severe weather. Two events impacted the region in a span of 3 days which produced several tornadoes, large hail and wind damage across the area.
An unseasonably strong tornado outbreak began on January 7, 2008, and continued for nearly four days across the Central and Southern United States, with the hardest hit area being southwestern Missouri, northwestern Arkansas, and the surrounding area. In addition, a strong supercell in northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin produced that region's first January tornadoes since 1967.

The 1998 Townsville and Thuringowa city floods began on 10 January 1998, the cities of Townsville and Thuringowa in North Queensland, Australia, were inundated by one of the worst floods in the cities' history. Excessive rainfall caused the Ross and Black rivers to both burst their banks and local stormwater drainage systems were overwhelmed.

This was a two day storm event that began late in the day on January 10 with strong winds and contained several moderate to heavy rain bands. Wind blew two trees onto vehicles and ripped off a roof in the Apple Valley.
A 35-year-old pregnant woman was swept away by a flash flood in City Creek. The creek rose very quickly from a trickle to a 6 ft deep torrent when a blockage upstream finally gave way. Her car was swept 2 miles downstream, and her body was recovered two days later.
