Following a bitterly cold arctic air mass that settled in across the Ark-La-Tex area during the previous several days, strong southerly winds in response to a strong pressure gradient over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley during the late evening and overnight hours of January 9th-10th resulting in sustained winds of 15-20 mph with gusts to 30 mph over much of Northern Louisiana. A male and female ventured out onto Lake Bistineau in Southeast Bossier Parish during the late night hours for a fishing trip where the strong winds capsized their small boat. The 35 year old male drowned, with his body later found around 9:20 am on the 9th. The 34 year old female was found clinging to a tree around 6:40 am by a man who was duck hunting. She was taken to a hospital and treated for hypothermia but did survive the accident.
