Where do these ski snow reports come from?

From public measurements around each mountain: NOAA's National Snow Analysis for snow on the ground at the summit and the base, the USDA's SNOTEL stations for new snow and the snowpack against its median, and the National Weather Service for the snowfall forecast at the top and the bottom. A resort's own report may differ.

What counts as a powder day?

This site calls 6 inches of new snow in a day, measured or forecast at the summit, a powder day, and a foot deep powder.

What this means

Where these numbers come from: Resorts keep their own snow reports and do not publish them openly, so this page reads the public record around the mountain: NOAA’s snow analysis for the ground at the top and bottom, the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s SNOTEL stations for new snow and the snowpack, and the National Weather Service for the forecast. A resort’s own report may differ, especially after grooming or snowmaking.
New snow: Snow depth gained at the nearest SNOTEL site over the period. New snow settles as it lies, so this reads a little below what a snow board would measure.
Powder alert: This site’s own line: a powder day at 6 inches of new snow in a day, measured or forecast at the summit, deep powder at a foot.
Snowpack against median: How much water the snow at the nearest SNOTEL site holds against the 1991-2020 median for the date: 100% is a normal season to date.
