One of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in Oklahoma history occurred on this date back in 1955. Several tornadoes occurred across western, central, and northern Oklahoma. The most devastating tornado formed just north of Oklahoma City, and moved northward, striking the town of Blackwell. Twenty people were killed and 280 were injured as the tornado destroyed eastern portions of the town. Another tornado formed just northeast of Blackwell and moved into Kansas, killing 80 people and injuring over 270 in and near the town of Udall.

Rich low level moisture rapidly lifted north across the Plains on Saturday May 25th with storms initially developing along a developing dryline across western Oklahoma. One particular storm gained strength as it tracked north of the Oklahoma/Kansas border.

On May 25, 1980, a severe thunderstorm crossed the southern part of Knox County, in northern Texas. The storm mainly affected the community of Munday, and to a lesser extent, Knox City. The storm produced hail up to softball-size and an incredible 4 to 10 inches of rain.

A series of low pressure systems traveling west to east along a nearly stationary frontal boundary produced some locally heavy rain across Eastern Pennsylvania.
Trees were blown down, and a roof on an outbuilding was damaged.
A significant round of severe weather affected west Texas late on the 25th and during the morning hours of the 26th. Scattered thunderstorms initiated late in the afternoon across the Permian Basin of west Texas and produced large hail.
Tree limbs were blown down. The spotter estimated a 60 mph gust.
Many trees were downed in the vicinity of the Yellowbank Wildlife Management Area due to straight line winds. The damage area was roughly one quarter mile wide and a mile long. All the trees fell in the same general direction, east southeastward.
A strong warm front was in place across central Nebraska through northern Missouri. The front aloft bisected Iowa from northwest to southeast. A 35 kt low level jet was in place with strong moisture transport into the state.
During the peak of snowmelt on the Grand Mesa was a period of heavy rainfall which may have combined to precipitate a massive landslide on the north side of the Grand Mesa.
Across already very saturated grounds, a slow moving line of thunderstorms moved into Harris County from central Texas during the evening hours of the 25th.

A supercell thunderstorm produced large hail in both southern Shiawassee and Southern Genesee Counties. In both Linden and Fenton of southern Genesee County, the hail fell for at least 10 minutes, causing serious damage to two fruit orchards in these communities.
About 10,000 acres of cotton was flattened by egg-size hail.
