An F3 tornado touched down in Clarke County, Alabama and tracked 6.5 miles, 300 yards wide at its widest, injuring 1.
An F4 tornado touched down in Jefferson, Copiah, Simpson counties, Mississippi and tracked 117.8 miles, 200 yards wide at its widest, killing 32 and injuring 241.
A tornado touched down in south Shreveport just east of the Lucian Airport, moved across the airport and continued northeast across the southeast section of the city. Several retirement homes and numerous housing subdivisions were severely damaged.
A tornado destroyed a mobile home and injured its four occupants. Another home received minor roof damage. Trees were snapped and uprooted by the tornado.
A tornado touched down in southwest Rambin, moved northeast through Rambin, then lifted. Damage consisted of numerous trees twisted and snapped or completely uprooted. Four houses sustained major damage. Other houses were damaged from trees falling into them.
A waterspout moved onshore as a tornado and destroyed two mobile homes and damaged up to another 25 at the Indigo Mobile Home Park near State Road 775 and Grove Road.

During the early morning hours of January 23, 2012, a large and intense tornado, commonly known as the Center Point Tornado, struck the northeastern part of the Birmingham, Alabama metropolitan area, particularly the cities of Center Point and Clay, Alabama, United States. The National Weather Service rated the most intense damage caused by the tornado EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

By the 23rd many tributaries to the Ohio river had already crested and were receding back within their banks. However, a significant rain event occurred on the 23rd bringing over 2 inches of rain to South Central areas with lesser amounts to the north.
Several creeks around Humboldt Bay quickly rose over their banks during a heavy rain event. Numerous roads were closed due to water with considerable damage to the road surface. The streams mainly affected were Jacoby, Freshwater and Salmon Creeks.
The combination of significant prior snow cover, unusually mild temperatures, and recent rainfall led to widespread flooding on the Ohio river, as well as backwater flooding on a few tributaries.
Heavy rainfall of three to five inches in less than 24 hours caused flooding of up to 300 homes from Bradenton to Myakka Head in Manatee county.
The Manatee River at Myakka Head along State Road 64 crested at 15.5 feet on the 24th, eight and a half feet above the flood stage of seven feet. Significant crop damage occurred, mainly to tomatoes, from the floodwaters.
Heavy rains of four to five inches caused localized flooding of roadways and low lying areas. Several cars stalled and incurred water damage between U.S. Highways 41 and 301 in Sarasota.
The Peace River along State Road 70 in Arcadia crested at 13.7 feet on the 28th, nearly three feet above the flood stage of 11 feet. A few homes along the banks of the Peace River received minor flood damage.
Heavy rains of four to five inches caused localized flooding of roadways and low lying areas. The Rogers Garden Park apartments on the 5800 block of Eighth Street Court East incurred water damage from the floodwaters.
The Horse Creek crested at 13.3 feet, nearly one and a half feet above the flood stage of twelve feet, on the 24th. A few homes in the Hidden Acres subdivision received minor flood damage.
In Hillsborough county, heavy rains caused the Little Manatee River to crest at 14.7 feet, over three and a half feet above the eleven foot flood stage at U.S. Highway 301. A few homes were damaged by floodwaters in Ruskin.
Unseasonably warm, moist air and strong winds through a deep layer of the atmosphere combined to produce a line of thunderstorms along a cold front advancing east across North Carolina.
Around one inch of rain fell between 4 and 11 am. This resulted in stream rises in the county. Streams rose high enough to cover low water bridges. A 54 year old male attempted to drive across a low water bridge near Taulbee.
Warm temperatures melted the snowpack from record snowfall in late December and early January. Nearly two feet of ripe snowpack dissolved to just a few inches remaining.
Ice jams caused the Maumee River at Grand Rapids to exceed its flood stage of 15 feet. The river crested at 18 feet at 2300 EST on 01/23/99. Roads, fields, businesses and homes were flooded. Flooding of streets and parking lots occurred in Pemberville, also on the Maumee River.

An ice jam broke on Conneaut Creek. Nearby homes were flooded.
An ice jam on the Ashtabula River at Northcoast Marina and Yacht Club broke loose and snapped the docks apart like twigs. The river also flooded bottom land and at least one road. Other rural roads were flooded by melting piles of snow.
Rain and snowmelt caused the Maumee River at Waterville to exceed its flood stage of nine feet. The river crested at 13.36 feet at 0700 EST on 01/25/99. Basement flooding occurred in homes along the river and also in Side Cut Park.
Torrential rainfall caused localized street flooding in Thomasville. Hourly Doppler radar estimates of one to two inches were indicated.
Snowmelt and rain that fell for several days caused flooding of streams, including French Creek, several roads and a few basements.

A band of significant rainfall repeatedly doused parts of extreme northwest Alabama and southern middle Tennessee. Radar estimated rainfall in isolated locations as high as 6 to 8 inches, but the majority of the area received 2 to 4 inches of rain.
Several bridges were washed out. Many roads were under water.
Thunderstorms repeatedly moved over the same corridor from Ripley County east-northeast across the Poplar Bluff area to Scott County. Over the course of a few hours, 3 to 5 inches of rain fell.
A vigorous upper level trough and cold front swept through the mid and deep South during the evening hours of the 22nd and early morning hours of the 23rd. Multiple bands of thunderstorms, some including embedded supercells, tracked rapidly northeast at 50 to 60 mph.
Strong thunderstorms developed over the northern Sacramento Valley, dropping large hail, up to 3 inches in diameter. There was also large amounts of small hail, up to 5 inches deep, bringing slippery road conditions, clogging storm drains and causing vehicle accidents.

Heavy rains caused flooding across portions of southwest Alabama.
Low pressure tracked through the central Great Lakes bringing widespread rain to the area along with temperatures in the mid 40s. This warm up was preceded by a significant snow event on the 19th and 20th which produced widespread snow amounts from 6 to 16 inches.
Low pressure, tracking from the New Jersey coast to Nantucket, produced heavy, wet snow that was pretty much confined to the higher elevations in western and northern Massachusetts.
Upper-level disturbances moving through moist southwest flow aloft brought showers and thunderstorms to eastern Arkansas during the evening hours of January 23rd. A warm front pushed north creating areas of dense fog over eastern Arkansas.
A series of disturbances moved across the area resulting in numerous flash flood events that resulted in the flooding of many homes, extensive high water rescues, and a flood-related fatality.

High winds during the night of the 23rd through the early morning of the 24th downed trees and power lines across the Alleghany Highlands, parts of the foothills, the Southern Shenandoah, Roanoke, and New River valleys of Virginia.
During the early morning hours of January the 23rd, a squall line, ahead of an approaching cold front from the west, brought 60 mph winds to the southwestern portion of central Indiana.

Following the passage of a cold front, wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph resulted in scattered trees down and power outages across the northern Piedmont.
An Erickson helicopter pilot was killed when his aircraft crashed in a wooded area near Interstate 5 at an elevation of 4100 feet. The time of the crash is unknown, but it occurred in the morning and the pilot took off from Medford airport at 8:45 PST.
Surface high pressure was wedged against the eastern face of the Appalachians, resulting in strong southeasterly winds ahead of an approaching low pressure system. Downslope winds along the western face of the mountains resulted in scattered wind damage.

An area of low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico Thursday (January 22) moved to the Ohio Valley Friday morning (January 23) and weakened. A secondary storm developed in the mid-atlantric coastal region Friday (January 23) and moved northeast.
Two men skiing at the 9000 foot level just outside of the Aspen Highlands Ski Area triggered an avalanche which was 75 feet across and 100 feet long. Both men were buried. One person survived.
8 inches of snow fell at Fish Camp along with 15 inches at Tuolumne Meadows at the higher elevations.
The storm system mentioned in the previous entry resulted in less than a half inch of snow in the Topeka area yet roads became slick and hazardous resulting in two major traffic accidents near the I-70 and I-470 interchange in west Topeka.

Strong high pressure moved across the northern plains on January 22 and 23rd. Low temperatures on the morning of January 23rd ranged from zero to five below across most of northern Illinois. Chicago Ohare Airport recorded a low temperature of 4 below zero.

In the wake of the winter storm, a high pressure system from Canada built into the northeastern part of the United States.
An 84 year old woman, living alone in a house in Capels, died from exposure to the cold. A local minister had checked on her during Sunday afternoon the 23rd. Her house was warm at that time. Sometime afterwards, late on Sunday or during Monday, her furnace stopped working.
Temperatures fell to -5 F on January 23rd. A man was dead found in his home with hypothermia and cold exposure contributing factors to his death.
Temperatures in the lower 30s were observed with wind chills in the 20s during the predawn hours of January 23rd. The Pima County Medical Examiner confirmed that hypothermia was the primary cause of death for one adult male in the Peloncillo Mountains of southeast Cochise County.
A 45 year old man was found dead near the WinCo grocery store on January 24th on the 1000 block of Yellowstone. Temperatures were in the teens and it is believed extended exposure to cold temperatures contributed to his death.
A series of cold nights occurred across southeast Arizona in mid to late January with low temperatures 15 to 25 degrees below normal. The Pima County Medical Examiner determined that hypothermia was the primary cause of death for two individuals in Patagonia.

Dense fog formation through the Central and Southern San Joaquin Valley brought numerous vehicle collisions including one in Clovis, 1 in Hanford with an injury, and another in Porterville that involved a school bus (5 injured).
Dense fog and icy roads led to a 12 vehicle chain-reaction collision on Interstate-82 south of the Tri-Cities. This accident lead to several injuries and closed the southbound lanes for 7 hours.
