The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has extended 
the

* Flash Flood Warning for...
  Central McDowell County in western North Carolina...

* Until 230 AM EDT.

* At 843 PM EDT, McDowell County Emergency Management reporting 
  expanding flooding issues across the county. A few landslides have 
  been reported and several roads are closed.  Additional road 
  closures are expected.  Between 2 and 4 inches of rain have 
  fallen, but very little additional rainfall is expected.  However, 
  it will take several hours for excessive runoff to subside and for 
  area streams to crest and recede.  Therefore, please do not let 
  your guard down and avoid all low-lying areas adjacent to 
  streams.  Do NOT cross flooded roadways as those roadways may have 
  been damaged by swift currents.  Avoid all low-water crossings as 
  flood waters can rise quickly and without warning.

  HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms
           producing flash flooding.

  SOURCE...Emergency management reported.

  IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams,
           urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.  A few
           structures may experience flooding and a few roadways
           may be damaged or washed out from strong flood waters.
           A few landslides may also occur.

* Some locations that may experience increasing flash flooding 
  include...
  Marion, Old Fort, Lake James, Pleasant Gardens, Woodlawn, Little 
  Switzerland, North Cove and Ashford.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Heavy rain is increasing the risk of landslides, especially in areas 
where slides have occurred in the past. Be especially alert if you 
are near a stream, especially at the base of a mountain or in a 
cove. Watch for loose-moving soil and rocks or a sudden increase in 
streamflow. Leave the area quickly if this is observed. When driving 
along roads where the terrain is steep or rocky, watch and listen 
for falling rocks, mud, trees and other debris.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood 
deaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are 
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded 
roads. Find an alternate route.

...FLASH FLOOD WARNING IS CANCELLED FOR CENTRAL MCDOWELL COUNTY...

The heavy rain has ended across McDowell County and small streams 
across the area have crested and receded below critical levels. 
However, nuisance flooding continues for the Catawba River from 
Pleasant Gardens to Lake James.  Therefore, a Flood Advisory will 
remain in effect for the Catawba River until levels recede below 
bankfull.  Please continue to heed all barricades which remain in 
place to ensure roadway safety.
