- Strong winds develop across the area on Thursday. A High Wind
Warning is in effect for the Guadalupe, Delaware, and Davis
Mountains and Eddy County beginning Thursday morning through the
evening. A Wind Advisory is also in effect for parts of
southeast New Mexico and locations along the Trans-Pecos.
- Well-above normal temperatures, mostly sunny skies, and dry
conditions arrive on Friday and continue into next week.

Fog has once again developed tonight over the eastern Permian Basin
on the moist side of a boundary (evident on satellite imagery)
extending from approximately Lamesa southward. This fog is expected
to dissipate before the dawn as westerly winds push drier air west
of the boundary into the area. By mid-morning today, winds will
increase across the area coincident with the passage of a strong jet
associated with the weather system passing to our north. As a result
of these increasing winds, the High Wind Warning has been maintained
while the Wind Advisory has been extended to include the southern
tier of Lea County along with Pecos and Winkler Counties. Wind gusts
up to 70mph should be expected in the warned area, while gusts up to
55mph can be anticipated within the advisory. Some areas of blowing
dust may also accompany these enhanced winds.
Winds will start to subside after sunset today. Highs top out in the
upper 50s and low 60s areawide, and lows tonight will drop down into
the low to mid 30s for most under clear skies. A warm-up begins on
Friday, with highs jumping back into the 60s and even low 70s for
some locations. This is just the beginning of more spring-like

The start of February is going to feel more like Spring across much
of the southern Great Plains. Beginning this weekend and heading
through much of the following week, much warmer weather is
anticipated for the region. This warmer weather is supported by
increasing heights from mid-level ridging and zonal flow over the
southern tier of the United States. Temperatures easily climb into
the 70s and even 80s for most each afternoon. This equates to
temperatures about 10 to 20 degrees above normal. Though anomalous,
it does appear likely that we fall short of record territory at this
juncture. Similarly, warm overnight temperatures are to be expected
with upper 30s and 40s most common across the area. With this warmer
weather pattern, hardly any clouds are expected and thus no rain is
in sight. Enjoy the warm, dry, and sunny weather to start the new
month!
