Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 151 AM PST Sun Feb 5 2023 .SYNOPSIS...A snow band will move across the state this morning, bringing accumulations and some areas of slick roads. Scattered snow showers continue this afternoon through Monday morning. Gusty winds will cause some areas of blowing and drifting snow. Dry weather returns for Tuesday. && .UPDATE...Updated the forecast to expedite the start time of the Winter Weather Advisories to 3 am due to radar trends indicating an earlier arrival of the snow band. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 133 AM PST Sun Feb 5 2023/ SYNOPSIS...A snow band will move across the state this morning, bringing accumulations and some areas of slick roads. Scattered snow showers continue this afternoon through Monday morning. Gusty winds will cause some areas of blowing and drifting snow. Dry weather returns for Tuesday. SHORT TERM...Today through Monday night A snow band will be moving east across the state this morning, exiting White Pine County by early afternoon. The trough will drift east across the Great Basin through tonight. Scattered convective snow showers will develop during the afternoon hours behind the main band aided by the heating of the day. Anywhere that does receive a shower could receive a quick 1/2" to an inch or so of additional snow in a short amount of time. Storm total snows look to be up to an inch or so in many valleys, but some 1-4" totals will occur, especially in higher valleys and along passes. Mountains of Elko County will see 4 to 11 inches of snow and various Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for both valleys and mountains. Southerly winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph (and to 45 mph in the mountains) will continue, shifting to the west as the day wares on. This will cause some blowing and drifting of snow. Highs will be in the 30's to lower 40's. Snow showers tonight into Monday morning continue, mainly in northern Nevada, and most additional snow accumulations will be in the mountains of Elko County. Showers diminish on Monday afternoon as Northwest gusty winds increase. This may cause additional drifting of snow where the higher amounts of snow have fallen, especially in those areas more susceptible to downsloping of NW winds such as Tonopah, Ruby Valley and NE Elko County. Cooler highs will be in the mid 20's to mid 30's and lows Monday night will drop back into the single digits through the mid teens. LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday. Tuesday will likely see a transient ridge move across the region bringing fair weather to the silver state. This will be short lived as the next period of unstable weather will likely be on Wednesday as a trough passes through the West. There remains a fair amount of uncertainty with this trough with about equal chances that it will clip northern NV or pass to the north of the silver state. If it passes north then only cloud cover will occur in the silver state. If it clips northern NV light snow showers will likely occur in at least northern NV. The current forecast favors the clipping of northern NV with some snow showers as this is more typical climate wise for this time of year. With that being said the snow the does occur will be minimal as there will likely be little moisture associated with the trough. Only the mountains in northern NV stand to see any measurable snowfall at this time. After this uncertain trough passes through there is very high chance that a ridge will pass through late Thursday through Saturday. This in turn will cause fair weather across the silver state. There is already indications that the next period of unsettled weather will return to NV on Sunday with another winter system. Temperatures Tuesday to Sunday are looking to be more seasonable with highs in the 30s to 40s and lows in single digits to twenties. However if the snowpack holds firm these temperatures may be a little optimistic with slightly colder condtions prevailing. AVIATION...Latest high resolution models are still on track to see a new winter system bring another round of snow showers to the region. Currently, showers are expected to start in the northwest with KWMC and KBAM seeing initial impacts in the early morning hours today. KEKO will follow not to long after with KTPH and KELY seeing the change over closer towards the late morning. With showers present, MVFR conditions will be likely over the terminals with both ceilings and visibility expected to fall for extended periods of time. Potential for occasional IFR to LIFR conditions will also be present with best chance over KELY. Outside of the terminals, this system will also have the ability to create mountain obscurity, especially at the lower elevations where low ceilings could hide peaks. Gusty winds are also expected to occur with the passage of the this, which could result in turbulence at the lower-levels. Otherwise, conditions will look to slowly get better heading into the overnight of Sunday with showers becoming more isolated and impacts in the vicinity of the terminals becoming more likely.
