Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 136 AM MST Sun Feb 5 2023 .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday Night. A low pressure system will move through southern Idaho today. We will see an initial push of snow move through central Idaho this morning and then through east Idaho this afternoon. Some rain may mix with the snow across the Magic Valley which will further reduce amounts there. Otherwise, expecting all snow for precip type. We will see a break in the snow before a second wave of snow arrives on the back side of the low overnight tonight into Monday morning. Most of the snow with this second wave only affects the southern highlands and above 6500 feet with an additional 1 to 3 inches. As a whole, snow totals with this event haven't changed much. Valley locations during this event will see up to 3 inches. The Snake Plain and Magic Valley will see a dusting to 2 inches. Mid and upper slopes above Ketchum to Stanley will see around 6 inches. The eastern highlands still has the more impressive amounts with 3 to 8 inches above 6000 feet, closer to a foot at ridge top levels. No changes in the winter weather advisories at this time. Wind is the other story with this system. The strongest winds are still expected across the eastern Magic Valley and south hills with near advisory level winds possible. However, the arrival of the strongest winds is now Monday morning and lasting through the day. Given the shift in timing adding a degree of uncertainty, will likely allow another forecast run before issuing any wind headlines. Most of the snow should come to an end Monday afternoon. 13 .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday. A shallow upper trough will quickly move into the area early Wednesday. Deterministic models show good agreement with the timing and intensity of the trough, and snowfall should be fairly light. NBM probabilistic guidance shows only the highest peaks of the Stanley Basin showing a 50 percent probability of 4+ inches. For the rest of the mountain zones, snow will amount to around 1 to 3 inches with the Snake Plain getting less than an inch. Winds will increase Tuesday night and Wednesday with the approach and passage of the upper trough. Peak gusts look to be in the 30 to 35 mph range along the I-86 corridor between PIH and BYI. Models show strong ridging building in behind the trough, and weather should remain fair Thursday and Friday, though temperatures will be cooler. Hinsberger && .AVIATION...WV imagery this morning shows a shortwave lifting out of a trough in the East Pacific. We should start seeing impacts from the shortwave between 12Z and 15Z this morning with snow beginning first at SUN and BYI. Statistical guidance suggests PIH, BYI, and SUN could drop to MVFR this morning/afternoon with IDA and DIJ dropping as low as IFR. HRRR visibility is a bit more pessimistic with a period of LIFR conditions along with the heaviest snow. We should see winds shifting out of the south/southwest with gusts to 25 to 30 kts this afternoon. Snow should come to an end between 18Z and 21Z, however the HRRR is showing mid afternoon convective buildups between PIH and BYI. The 3km NAM is showing the buildups a bit further south.
