EF1 tornado, Waverly, Ohio, March 1, 2017

This EF1 tornado ran 0.6 miles across Pike County on March 1, 2017, touching down at 8:16 AM EST and reaching 125 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $30,000 of property damage.

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

What the Weather Service recorded

An unseasonably warm and moist air mass was in place across the region during the morning hours of March 1st. Showers and thunderstorms developed across the Ohio Valley during the early morning hours as a strong low pressure system lifted northeast into the Great Lakes region. These storms produced heavy rain, large hail and several tornadoes. A squall line then moved through the region during the mid morning hours ahead of an approaching cold front. These storms resulted in damaging winds and additional heavy rain.

A weak tornado briefly touched down, initially near Denver Road to the south of Left Fork Crooked Creek. Tornado damage consisted of primarily hardwood and softwood trees that were both snapped off above ground and uprooted. In addition, some structural damage was noted, including complete destruction of three outbuildings, and partial roof removal from a residential home. One additional home suffered minor structural damage to one side.||Damage showed a distinctively convergent pattern in the immediate vicinity of Left Fork Crooked Creek, particularly in several stands of trees. In this area, tree damage was extensive and significant.
