.SYNOPSIS...A winter storm with heavy mountain snow, gusty winds
and the potential for moderate to heavy rain on areas with deep
snowpack will cross the area Tuesday into Thursday. The active
pattern will continue into the next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Friday)...A significant winter storm is
in progress across the region early this morning. Morning upper
air and satellite analysis indicates several shortwave troughs
impacting the area, one crossing Nevada and the final, strongest
shortwave crossing eastern Oregon and Washington. A pronounced
atmospheric river is noted, with areas of very heavy precipitation
from southern California into Nevada and Arizona, beginning to
once again encroach on southwestern Utah. Meanwhile across
northern Utah, a well forced band of heavy precipitation (largely
mountain snow and valley rain with snow levels near 6500 feet or
so) is stretching from roughly Wendover to Bear Lake.

Let's start with northern and central Utah as there are two
different storm modes; one for northern and central Utah and one
for southern Utah. As the first shortwave moves through the area,
moderate to heavy precipitation will continue across portions of
northern and central Utah into the morning. Observations have
noted wind gusts to 50 mph or so as the band has approached
portions of the northern valleys. Some northern valleys are seeing
rainfall rates around 0.10-0.20 inches per hour. Will continue to
monitor these heavy rainfall rates in areas with large remaining
snowpack as rain on snow flooding remains possible, particularly
for the Cache and Wasatch Back. Recent radar trends over the last
15 minute show some intensification of this band.

This band of moderate to heavy precipitation will shift south and
east with time through the morning, reaching by late morning.

The cold front will cross northern Utah late this morning into
this afternoon displaced behind this initial band of precipitation,
largely bringing an end to most valley precipitation. Mountains
may continue to see snow showers into the evening. Given the
abrupt dry air advection behind this second shortwave, have opted
to end the winter storm warnings/winter weather advisories for the
northern and central mountains early, around 9 PM tonight. Padded
this a bit due to variation in guidance, but it's entirely
possible the warning could be cancelled as early as 4 PM.

Aside from wind gusts associated with the band of moderate to
heavy precipitation, winds are well below wind advisory criteria
in the western valleys. However, given winds have gusted up to 55
mph in association with this band, opted to leave the wind
advisories up for now...but may be able to cancel these before the
day shift arrives.

For southern Utah...the forecast will unfold quite a bit
differently. RADAR returns show increasing coverage of
precipitation this morning associated with deep moisture advection.
Expect this to continue over the next few hours, with widespread
valley rain and mountain snow near or above 8000 feet through
noon. By this time, the best forcing associated with the banded
precipitation up north this morning will shift into southern Utah.
With afternoon heating and steep lapse rates, expect the
potential for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening,
particularly across southwestern and south central Utah. After a
morning of moderate to heavy rainfall, this could further
exacerbate any flooding issues. CAMs indicate the threat for an
additional 0.25-0.50" (10th/90th percentile) of precipitation
with locally higher amounts during the convective mode of this
system...after similar amounts this morning.

Current CBRFC forecasts for the Virgin River indicate the river
may approach flood stage for a time near Bloomington with stout
rises on many of the waterways across southwestern Utah. A flood
watch remains in effect for Zion National Park. Expect all
streams, dry washes, slot canyons and other waterways across
southern Utah below 7500 feet or so to be running high and fast
today. Will need to monitor for potential flash flood warnings
with any convection.

Those with any potential outdoor plans across southern Utah should
monitor the forecast and consider postponing plans that include
travel near waterways including slot canyons and normally dry
washes. Enhanced snowmelt combined with rain can be dangerous in
slot canyons.

Expect convection to continue across southwestern Utah into the
evening. Precipitation will gradually end from west to east
Thursday morning across southern Utah.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Friday)...An active pattern continues for
the long term as a series of shortwaves and a longwave trough move
through the area. Temperatures throughout this period are
expected to be 8 to 15 degrees below normal. Beginning on Friday,
conditions will be dry and quiet as the region is under a
shortwave ridge.

Heading into the weekend, a series of shortwave troughs will
increase the chance at seeing precipitation across the CWA. The
first shortwave arrives Saturday and this currently isn't being
picked up by all of the guidance. Forty percent of ensembles have
this impacting southern Utah but of that 40%, the majority of this
percentage comes from the EPS. The GFS/GEFS have a shortwave
moving through but having minimal impacts. In addition, the
columns remain relatively dry so precipitation would have a hard
time reaching the surface.

By Sunday a stronger shortwave moves through the area. The total
percentage of ensembles that have a wet solution for this
shortwave is ~80%. With columns getting more moist, the chances of
precipitation reaching the surface increases. PWAT values also
increase to 0.25" and 0.40". This shortwave would be focused over
southern Utah. The last shortwave has about a 45% chance of
bringing precipitation to some area of Utah. As far as the exact
location of where precipitation occurs is still in question as
guidance differs on this topic. Some ensembles bring moisture to
northern Utah and others southern Utah. Another area of
uncertainty is the precipitation type. Currently the forecasted
700mb temperatures are around -8 degrees C, which means snow could
reach valley floors, but there are other factors such as
southerly flow and warmer temperatures to also consider. At the
moment going with rain as the predominant p-type for valley floors
and wintry mix/snow for benches.

After these shortwaves pass through, a longwave trough sets up
over the area and brings back the chance of seeing another AR
event on Tuesday and Wednesday as southwest flow and increased
moisture move over the area. This AR would send moisture around
the south end of the Sierra Nevadas. This is something to monitor
as it is about a week away so the forecast is most likely going to
change as future model runs come in.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Rain will begin between 11Z and 13Z and
continue through ~17Z. MVFR conditions and mountain obscuration
are likely during precipitation. IFR conditions could occur due to
lowered visibilities and CIGS from heavier precipitation rates.
There is also a 15% chance of thunder along this line of
precipitation. Scattered showers will continue until ~19Z. Gusty
southerly winds will transition to northwesterly winds around 13Z
as a cold front moves through with the line of precipitation.
Winds could become variable while it is raining. Skies should
clear up by the afternoon.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Gusty southerly to
southwesterly flow will continue across much of the area ahead of
the passage of a cold front. This cold front will bring a line of
precipitation southeastward across the CWA throughout the morning
and afternoon. Most locations will see rain but mountain valleys
and higher elevations will see snow. Southern Utah will see rain
for much of the day ahead of the front. MVFR conditions are likely
during the frontal passage with IFR conditions possible depending
on the precipitation rates. CIGS will stay between 4kft and 7kft.
Thunder will also be possible along the line.
