Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 1251 PM PST Wed Dec 6 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Unsettled weather begins this evening and lasting through the end of the week, with multiple storm systems bringing colder temperatures, rain and snow showers, and gusty winds to the region. Drier conditions return for Friday evening before light mountain snow showers arrives to northern Nevada for the weekend and early next week. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday evening Mid to high level clouds is streaming ahead of a Pacific NW trough and cold front traversing the state. Clouds will continue to lower into the afternoon and evening hours, with light valley rain and mountain snow showers expected mainly to northern NV. Winds will also breezy with gusts approaching to 30-40 mph. As the cold front advances southeastward tonight, snow levels rapidly drop to around 4000-5000 feet by early Thursday, allowing rain to transition to snow for the valleys. Snowfall amounts in valley locations will be less than a half inch with 1-2 inches across the high terrain. After a brief break, a stronger weather disturbance with an attendant cold front moves through the region Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. Highest snow totals will be over the high terrain of northern Elko County and the Ruby Mountains/East Humboldt Range, with locally higher amounts on the mountain peaks. Southwest winds will increase up to 15-25 mph and gusts to 30-40 mph, causing patchy blowing snow for the mountain areas. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect Thursday evening to Friday morning with 3-7 inches of snowfall for elevations above 6500 feet. Meanwhile, lighter accumulations expected across the valleys with generally 1 to 2 inches indicated. Drier conditions return for the rest of the day Friday along with subsiding winds as the system exits the region. Overnight lows will drop into the single digits to teens under mostly clear skies. .LONG TERM...Friday night through next Wednesday. An exiting low pressure feature will allow for diminishing snow showers across northern Nevada Friday night with little to no accumulation across Elko county. Northwest flow in place, diminishing winds Friday night and clearing skies will promote quite cold temperatures starting Saturday morning with many single digit lows in the eastern Nevada high valleys. This will be the coldest night of the forecast period however as rising heights and return of some cloud cover allows low temperatures to rebound somewhat with lows int he teens and 20s for the remainder of the week. Another upper-level short wave will bring a few more snow showers to northern Nevada Sunday with an overall drier, stagnant weather pattern setting up for the remainder of next week. There may be a few light mountain snow showers from time to time across far northern Nevada Monday through Thursday but probability of impactful snow of about an inch or more remains low below 10% in all valleys. High temperatures will remain in the 30s across northern Nevada for the most part Monday through midweek. 40S for highs are expected across northern Nye County valleys. && .AVIATION...Gusty winds ahead of an approaching cold front and associated weather disturbance will continue into the evening hours with gusts from the south-southwest in the 20 to 30 knot range for all sites except KTPH. Cloud cover will continue to increase across northern Nevada through tonight with progressively lower ceilings and increasing precipitation from west to east across the I-80 corridor beginning at 00Z for KWMC and ending at KEKO around 08Z. MVFR condtions are expected at times as the wave of precipitation moves through northern Nevada.
