Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA

.SYNOPSIS...13/301 AM.

It will be cooler with a little cooling today. It will also be a
little windy across the Santa Barbara south coast, most of the
mountains and the Antelope Valley. On Monday warmer temperatures
will return and remain above normal through next week. Gusty
northwest to north winds will continue at times through next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...13/301 AM.

Winds will dominate the weather discussions for the next week.
Currently a 4 mb offshore push from KBFL to KSBA is creating 40 to
50 mph gusts across the western portion of the SBA south coast.
The good news is that these winds are pushing cool damp marine air
from the Central Coast into the Hollister Fire. Later today a weak
trof will pass overhead and bring a NW to N upper air push to the
I-5 corridor and the Antelope Vly these upper level winds along
with some cold air advection will bring advisory level winds to
those areas. The winds may be strong enough to create some blowing
dust in the Antelope Vly later this afternoon or evening. The cold
air advection along with onshore flow will bring 3 to 6 locally 6
to 12 degrees of cooling to the area today. Despite this cooling
most max temps will end up above normal.

A ridge will move into the state on Monday and raise hgts to 578
dam. SFC high pressure will build into the great basin and bring 3
to 4 mb of offshore flow (both from the north and east) to the
area. There will be some NE canyon winds in the morning which will
flirt with advisory levels but ultimately should fall a wee bit
short. The offshore flow and rising hgts will combine to bring 3
to 6 degrees of warming to the area (except the SBA south coast
where the offshore flow will be much weaker) Max temps will end up
5 to 10 degrees above normal with a decent amount of readings in
the lower 80s in the vlys.

The upper pattern flip flops again on Tuesday as a weak trof
displaces the ridge. Look for another Northwest to North wind
event to develop in the afternoon in the Trofs wake. Probably a
low end advisory event for the western SBA south coast but sub
advisory for the I-5 corridor and the Antelope Vly. Most areas
will lose 2 to 4 degrees of the warming gained on Monday.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...13/323 AM.

The EC and GFS as well as their respective ensemble members are in
pretty good agreement for the xtnd fcst.

It look like the fast moving upper level pattern will continue
deep into next week and the weekend. Wed will have a trof, Thu a
ridge, Thu night a trof, Friday a ridge and then bigger troffing
for the weekend.

The east/west pressure gradients do not really go to much either
offshore or onshore, but the N/S gradients are at least
moderately offshore thru the period.

Marine layer stratus does not look that likely esp south of Pt
Conception. The Central Coast may see a little more stratus than
forecast.

As for temps look for some cooling Wed then warming Thu and Fri
followed by a big weekend cool down. max temps will remain above
normal through Friday - cool to normals next Saturday and then
plunge to well below normal next Sunday.

Wednesday and to a lesser degree Thursday will have the strongest
winds. They will be from the north and if current forecast
continues there will likely be advisory level gusts across the SBA
south coast and the mtns.

EC and GFS both show a cut off low zooming through the state over
the weekend. Its the tricky scenario where a few miles east or
west makes a big difference in the effects of the system. A
westerly track would be wetter while a path more to the east would
be drier and windier. This far out the ensemble points to a myriad
of possibilities. Right now will bring clouds to the area along
with a big cool down and a slight chc of rain esp on Sunday.

At 0730Z, the marine layer was around 400 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was around 1100 feet with a temperature around 17
degrees Celsius.

High confidence in the current forecast for valley and desert
terminals away from the coast. Moderate confidence in the current
forecast for coastal terminals and valley terminals north of Point
Conception.

There is a moderate-to-high (30-60 percent) chance of LIFR to IFR
conditions for coastal terminals and valley terminals north of
Point Conception through 17Z, and again after 03Z, otherwise VFR
conditions will persist.

KLAX...There is 50 percent chance of LIFR to IFR conditions
between 13Z and 17Z, and again after 10Z. Any east winds should
remain less than 7 knots.

KBUR...VFR conditions are expected through the period. No wind
impacts are expected at this time.

.MARINE...13/329 AM.

Moderate to high confidence in the current forecast. Higher
confidence in the wind forecast. Less confidence in the forecast
for seas.

For the waters from southwest through northwest of Channel Islands
and along the Central Coast, Small Craft Advisory (SCA) winds will
continue to expand through this afternoon with marginal SCA level
seas. There is a 30 percent that Gale Warning could be issued for
the waters southwest through west of the Channel Islands for this
morning. Winds and seas will likely diminish some between late
tonight and into early Monday morning, but widespread SCA wind and
sea conditions are expected to develop between Monday afternoon
and Tuesday, then linger into at least early Thursday. There is
30-40 percent chance of gales between Tuesday night and Wednesday
night for the waters from southwest through northwest of Channel
Islands.

Inside the southern California bight, SCA level winds and seas are
likely for periods through early Tuesday, strongest through the
Santa Barbra Channel during the late afternoon and evening hours.
There is a chance (40-60 percent) of SCA level winds across the
inner waters between Point Mugu and San Mateo Point this afternoon
and tonight, with the highest chance for the western portions.
Winds and seas will likely diminish some between late tonight and
into early Monday morning, but widespread SCA wind and sea
conditions are expected to develop between Tuesday afternoon and
Tuesday evening, then linger into at least early Thursday. There
is 20-30 percent chance of gales between Tuesday night and
Wednesday night for the Santa Barbara Channel.
