A ridge of high pressure over the western U.S. provided very warm and windy conditions. Areas near the coast reached into the 90s with records broken, along with wind gusts over 70 MPH in parts of the mountains.

.SYNOPSIS...
Santa Ana weather all this week with very warm days and periods of
gusty northeast winds in the mountains and foothills. Highs will be
in the 80s and low 90s west of the mountains which is 15 to 20
degrees above average.

COUNTIES...
An Excessive Heat Watch was issued for Orange County and the Inland
Empire Wednesday through Friday for unseasonably hot days from a
persistent Santa Ana weather pattern. The heat will last all the way
through Super Bowl Sunday, and the Heat Watch may very well be
extended through the weekend. Highs in Orange County and parts of
the Inland Empire will be in the mid 80s to around 90 Wednesday
through Friday. Another couple degrees of warming is possible
Saturday into Sunday depending on the location of the ridge axis
over the Southwest.
High pressure aloft will build northwestward off the PacNW Coast
through Wednesday, and then settle back eastward along the West
Coast through next weekend. This anomalous blocking ridge will
result in record, or near record daytime temperatures for parts of
northern and central California, and we may even see a couple here
before the week is out. Weak shortwaves topping the ridge will drop
south over the Great Basin, occasionally enhancing our prevailing
offshore flow with gusty Santa Ana winds below passes and canyons.
Winds will weaken through Tuesday, then strengthen again on
Wednesday into Thursday. Wind Advisories may be needed again by
Wed/Thu. Slight cooling is possible on Thursday, but high
temperatures will be well above average through the weekend.
There is ensemble consensus that the ridge along the West Coast will
collapse early next week. This should end the Santa Ana weather as
early as Monday, at least temporarily, and bring cooling inland.
There is no consensus regarding any precipitation though. For now,
wet solutions are in the minority next week.

Locally gusty northeast winds will continue into Tue morning. Winds
will increase overnight Tue into Wed morning. Sustained winds of 15-
25 kt with gusts 35-45 kt, locally up to 55 kt expected. LLWS and
moderate up/downdrafts expected in some areas west of the mountains.

Several sites across the region are reporting critical or near
critical fire weather conditions at midday. This will continue
this afternoon, mainly below the passes, and in favored wind-prone
canyons.
Santa Ana conditions with above average temperatures and prevailing
offshore flow will continue through next weekend. Strongest winds of
20-30 MPH, with local gusts 40-55 MPH will occur today, and again
around midweek with the best chance on Thursday. The northeast winds
could be more widespread on Thursday, otherwise they will
predominantly occur near the coastal slopes/foothills, below the
passes and at high points in the terrain farther west toward the
coast. minimum RH will be 8-14% most days, except slightly higher on
Thursday as we get some moisture arriving from the northeast. It
will be warmer by Wednesday, then temperatures will remain well
above average through next weekend.

The Emerald Fire burned 154 acres near Laguna Beach and Crystal Cove State Park during a Southern California Santa Ana wind event. Evacuation orders were in place near burn areas. No burned structures or injuries reported.
