Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 201 AM PST Fri Feb 26 2021 .SYNOPSIS...A winter system will move through NV today and Saturday brining snow showers and strong winds. This will be followed by a brief period of dry and fair weather. Beyond this uncertainty still reigns but no significant system seems to be waiting in the wings. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday. A winter system is passing through NV today and Saturday. This is bringing snow showers that will start in northern NV this afternoon and spread southward through the rest of the day. The showers will be heaviest in mainly northern Elko county where several inches of snowfall can occur in the high valleys. Outside of this area generally less than an inch is expected for the valleys. The mountains in northern NV will be winners in snow amounts with up to a foot possible. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 am today to 4 pm Saturday in northern Elko county and the Ruby Mountains/ Humboldt Range. The showers will last through to Saturday afternoon before rapidly dwindling and largely ceased by Saturday evening. This system will cause widespread breezy gusty winds across the silver state today with the strongest winds generally in the north. Winds Advisories for northern Lander and Eureka counties as well as the remainder of Elko county and all of Humboldt county start at 10 am today and go until 7 pm tonight. Locations in those areas could see winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Saturday will also see gusty winds across the silver state again but not to strength as today's winds. Following the passage of the system a ridge will migrate across the Great Basin. This will bring a period of dry and fair weather to the silver state starting on Sunday. Temperatures will be warm ahead of the system with highs reaching the 40s and 50s today and lows in the teens to 20s overnight. Cold air will the arrive Saturday with highs in the 30s and 40s. The biggest difference will be with the lows with teens to single digits for Sunday morning. Sunday will see the start of a warming trend but highs will stay in the 30s and 40s and lows in the single digits to 20s. .LONG TERM...Sunday night through Thursday Guidance continues to have significant disagreement over the evolution of the synoptic pattern in the long term, particularly after Monday. Quiet weather conditions should exist through Monday, but when that changes is still in question. At this time, it looks like light snow showers are possible as we approach the mid-week. Timing depends on which model you talk to. The NBM is currently leaning away from the GFS/GEFS output by clipping northern Nevada with a trough axis late Monday night. This would bring snow showers late Monday through late Tuesday. The GFS/GEFS solution brings a low pressure system to southern Nevada, resulting in light snow showers early Thursday morning. Either way, there is agreement that these are light snow showers with minimal snow accumulation. This also influences uncertainty pertaining to temperatures. The day each snow showers come through, afternoon highs drop a little bit, but overall afternoon highs sit in the 40s and 50s for the majority of next week. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected across most of northern and central NV through Friday morning. Unsettled weather returns to northern Nevada Friday afternoon with increasing upper and mid level cloud cover. Snow is expected to stay largely north of the I-80 corridor. However, strong west winds are expected with gusts of 30-40 knots Friday afternoon into early Friday evening. Light snow is then expected Friday night into Saturday morning at KBAM, KEKO and to a lesser extent KWMC and KELY lowering ceilings and reducing visibility at times to MVFR.
