Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 228 PM PDT Sun Oct 10 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Critical fire weather conditions late tonight through Tuesday evening due to strong north winds and low humidities. Lighter winds and a warming trend mid to late next week, except for locally breezy north winds Thursday. Light showers possible over the Sierra Monday. && .DISCUSSION... Dry conditions, seasonal temperatures and light winds prevail this afternoon. Afternoon temperatures are running 5 to 10 degrees warmer compared to 24 hours ago. Highs will generally be in the upper 60s to low 80s in the Valley and foothills. Forecast is on track for strong north winds to develop late tonight through Tuesday as ensembles depict an anomalous closed upper low digging from the PacNW into the Great Basin. The strongest winds are expected late tonight into Monday evening where a Wind Advisory is already in effect across much of the Valley, the Delta and the Coastal Range foothills. North wind gusts ranging from 35 to near 50 mph are possible, locally higher up to 55 mph. The ECMWF Extreme Forecast Index highlights the strongest anomalous winds occurring in the Valley, particularly over the southern Sacramento and northern San Joaquin valleys. Gusty winds will continue on Tuesday, though not as strong as Monday and will likely remain below advisory criteria. Gusts on Tuesday will generally be more in the 25 to 35 mph range, locally higher in some areas. For the Sierra, the strongest winds are expected Monday morning through Tuesday morning with gusts from 30 to 40 mph, locally higher up to 45 mph near favored gaps and canyons. These winds combined with low humidity and dry fuels will lead to critical fire weather conditions late tonight into Tuesday evening. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for the Delta, Coastal Range, and the Valley from late Sunday night into Tuesday evening and for the foothills and the northern Sierra late Monday morning into Tuesday evening. There is a brief period from Monday morning into the afternoon that a few light rain/snow showers may develop over the northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades as the upper low drops into the Great Basin. Generally less than an inch of snow is expected, mainly over high peaks south of I-80. Elsewhere, dry weather is expected. Lighter winds are expected by mid-week as the deep upper low moves over the Central US. Dry conditions will prevail by mid-week, except for a few light showers across portions of Shasta County Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning as a weak system clips the area. Regarding temperatures, daytime temperatures will be several degrees below normal through the short term period with Valley highs in the mid 60s to low 70s. Overnight lows will be below average. && .EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday)... Ensembles and cluster analysis indicate a gradual warming trend is likely later in the week as ridging from the eastern Pacific moves over NorCal. Ensembles suggest another round of north winds on Thursday as a short-wave moves through the ridge. Ensemble mean gusts range from the 20 to 30 mph in the Central Valley (a few members are indicating gusts in the mid 30s to low 40s). This could result in a brief period of elevated fire weather concerns Thursday. Nevertheless, it is still looking less impactful than the upcoming early-week event. With a dry airmass and relatively clear skies, high temperatures will warm to a little above average while overnight lows will be a little below average. && .AVIATION...
