HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SYNOPTIC DISCUSSION AND GUIDANCE-UPDATED NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 12 PM HST WED MAR 6 2002 SUMMARY...THE PLUME OF MOISTURE THAT BROUGHT THE HEAVY RAINS TO THE BIG ISLAND AND ENVIRONS YESTERDAY IS MOVING ALONG THE WINDWARD SIDES OF THE OTHER ISLANDS. THIS HAS PROMPTED THE ISSUANCE OF A FLOOD WATCH WHICH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE ISLANDS OF MAUI COUNTY AND OAHU...AND IS NOW EXTENDED TO KAUAI. TRADE WINDS HAVE DECREASED... AND WILL REMAIN LIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY. TRADES WILL REBOUND BRIEFLY OVER THE WEEKEND...BECOMING SOUTH TO SOUTHEAST AHEAD OF ANOTHER DISTURBANCE EARLY NEXT WEEK. DISCUSSION...AN UPPER TROUGH THAT SET OFF BIG STORMS OVER AND JUST EAST OF THE BIG ISLAND YESTERDAY AND LAST NIGHT IS MOVING OUT. A DIRTY RIDGE...WITH CONSIDERABLE HIGH CLOUD AND SOME NEARBY THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY ACCOMPANYING IT...WILL BE MOVING OVER THE ISLANDS FOR THE WEEKEND. THIS DECOUPLING OF THE LOWER LATITUDES FROM THE MID LATITUDE WESTERLY AIR FLOW HAS BROUGHT SOME UNSETTLED WEATHER TO THE ISLANDS...AND IT WOULD APPEAR THIS WILL CONTINUE INTO NEXT WEEK AS A MID-LEVEL LOW THAT FORMS TO OUR WEST DISSIPATES AND SENDS PACKETS OF ENERGY TOWARD THE ISLANDS FROM THE SOUTHWEST. FOR NOW...THE UNSTABLE AIR OF LAST NIGHT APPEARS TO BE STABILIZING... WITH THE CHANCES FOR HEAVY RAINFALL OVER THE CENTRAL ISLANDS GRADUALLY NEUTRALIZING IN THE PROCESS.
