HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SYNOPTIC DISCUSSION AND GUIDANCE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 850 PM HST TUE MAR 5 2002 SUMMARY...THE TRADES WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE REST OF THIS WEEK. THE WINDS WILL CARRY ISOLATED SHOWERS TO ALL ISLANDS...BUT THERE WILL ALSO BE LOTS OF SUNSHINE. THE HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE BIG ISLAND HAVE ENDED...AND SHOULD STAY OVER COASTAL WATERS TO THE EAST. DISCUSSION...THE HEAVY RAIN HAS ENDED OVER THE BIG ISLAND...EXCEPT FOR A THUNDERSTORM MOVING OFFSHORE FROM WAIPIO VALLEY ON THE WINDWARD KOHALA COAST. HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE EVENING FOR COASTAL WATERS EAST OF THE BIG ISLAND. THE SHORT WAVE TROUGH ALOFT THAT TRIGGERED THE THUNDERSTORMS IS LIFTING OUT TO THE NORTHEAST AND WILL TAKE THE HEAVY RAIN WITH IT. THE TROUGH CAN BEST BE SEEN ON THE WATER VAPOR SATELLITE MOVIE LOOP. NO CHANGE FROM THE 4 PM DISCUSSION REGARDING LARGE SCALE OR SYNOPTIC SCALE FEATURES. MODERATE LOCALLY FRESH TRADES WILL PERSIST FOR ANOTHER DAY THEN DIMINISH THURSDAY AS A SHEARLINE APPROACHES THE STATE FROM THE NORTHWEST. THE SHEARLINE WILL PASS BY AND THE TRADES WILL PICK UP AGAIN WHEN HIGH PRESSURE MOVES NORTH OF HERE THIS WEEKEND.
