* At 451 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line
  extending from near New Canton to Andersonville, moving northwest
  at 15 mph.

  HAZARD...70 mph wind gusts.

limits, and have exited the warned area. Therefore, the warning will
be allowed to expire.  However gusty winds and heavy rain are still
possible with these thunderstorms.

.SYNOPSIS...
Tropical Storm Michael will pass southeast of the area by this
evening and offshore overnight bringing ongoing rain to an end.
Cooler high pressure builds in on Friday and lingers into the
weekend with drier weather expected.
&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 210 PM EDT Thursday...

Michael will pass to the southeast by this evening and in
conjunction with a trailing cold front should shift deeper
moisture to the east and out of the area after sunset. Much
drier air following the front will surge in overnight resulting
in the advection of fallish type air by morning. Thus will keep
the trend in decreasing pops from southwest to northeast into
this evening before seeing things go dry by midnight. However
strong subsidence following Michael and behind the front will
result in a couple surges in north/northwest winds this evening,
and again overnight as gradient winds with the cool advection
rush in. Pressure rises remain impressive so expect gusts to
warning levels southwest and elsewhere mainly southern sections
just in the wake of the tropical system early this evening.
Otherwise leaving going wind headlines in place across the
region given wet soil conditions and potential to see trees
topple. Expect may be able to drop much of the flash flood watch
espcly west where currently tapering off but will hold off on
that until rain tapers off more. Expect drying to make for
clearing skies overnight although mixing likely to hold lows up
some with lows well into the 40s mountains and low/mid 50s east.

High pressure to nose in from the west as the upper flow
flattens. This should help to diminish the pressure gradient
during the afternoon with a very nice fall afternoon under
sunshine and crisp dewpoints in the 30s/40s. Continued cool
advection will help hold highs in the mid/upper 50s mountains to
60s Blue Ridge and around 70 piedmont where aided by downslope.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 PM EDT Thursday...

High pressure will build in behind a weak cold front Friday night. This
will bring some showers to the Appalachians and central mid Atlantic
region into Saturday morning, followed by our first real taste of fall
this weekend. However the pattern will remain progressive and as the
high slides off to the east on Sunday, another frontal system will
approach from the west with some isentropic lift and bring some showers
back to the region on Sunday into Sunday night.

For the first time in a good while, temperatures will be a good bit
below normal. Expect high temperatures to be in the low to mid 60s east
of the Blue Ridge to the mid/upper 50s to the west. Lows will generally
be in the 40s with some 30s possible in the valleys west of the Ridge.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 300 PM EDT Thursday...

The slow moving frontal boundary will move through the Appalachians and
central mid Atlantic region early next week with a good chance of
showers Monday into Tuesday. High pressure will then build in with fair
weather expected for the middle of next week.

Temperatures will trend down through the week and generally remain
below normal. Highs east of the Blue Ridge will go from the lower
70s on Monday to the middle 60s by Thursday, while readings west of
the Ridge go from the middle 60s to the upper 50s/near 60. Lows will
trend from the mid 50s east/upper 40s west to middle 40s east/near
40 west.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 1230 PM EDT Thursday...

Poor flying conditions to persist through much of the afternoon
with some gradual improvement possible from west to east by this
evening as Michael and the attendant cold front move east.
This will allow rain bands to continue over the area this
afternoon with coverage decreasing over the mountains by mid
afternoon while increasing across eastern locations before
tapering off this evening.

Winds will shift around to the northwest and pick up this
afternoon with gusts 30 to 35 kts possible espcly near KDAN
this afternoon/evening

As we head toward 00z, will start to see drying out from the
southwest to northeast and expect all taf sites excluding
KBLF/KLWb to improve to VFR this evening with low clouds
lingering a while longer in the mountains.

Northwest winds will be quite strong overnight espcly mountains
where gusts to 40 kts could occur.

Strong northwest winds will be common Friday morning in the
mountains in the wake of Michael along with areas of mountain
turbulence. Otherwise looking at widespread VFR across the
region on Friday with winds diminishing during the afternoon.

Confidence is above average for sub-VFR most of the period, but
lower how strong winds are and clearing to VFR.

Extended Discussion...

Generally VFR anticipated over the weekend. Another front
arrives Monday with possible sub-VFR cigs/vsbys with showers.
Front should push to the southeast by Tuesday although sub-VFR
cigs may persist.

.HYDROLOGY...
As of 225 PM EDT Thursday...

Heavy rain bands have now shifted east to along/east of the Blue
Ridge where another 2-5 inches could occur into early this
evening. Rain should gradually taper off to the west through the
rest of the afternoon with only light added amounts likely. Thus
will keep the going flash flood watch going for a while longer
over the west, and into tonight out east where heavy rain will
be slower to end.

This should allow things to transition from more of a flash
flood threat over the mountains to a flood or river flood
concern with flash flood potential lingering out east into the
evening.

The heavy rainfall of up to 6 inches in spots around Roanoke
since 9 am will push the Roanoke River into flood this evening
with high end moderate flooding along the Dan River into Friday
as well as along the New River at Radford. Flooding along the
Yadkin River will also occur.
