SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

   SOUTHERN TEXAS                              

EFFECTIVE THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 530 PM UNTIL 1100
PM CST.

HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS ALONG AND 85 STATUTE MILES
EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 30 MILES EAST SOUTHEAST OF LAREDO
TEXAS TO 50 MILES NORTHEAST OF SAN ANTONIO TEXAS.

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.

DISCUSSION...CONVECTION CONTINUES TO SPREAD ENEWD OUT OF THE RIO
GRANDE VALLEY LATE THIS AFTERNOON...WHICH HAS STRUGGLED TO MAINTAIN
ITS INTENSITY UPTIL NOW.  HOWEVER...LARGE SCALE ASCENT ASSOCIATED
WITH APPROACHING UPPER TROUGH IS STILL TO THE WEST.  THUS...SEVERE
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT IS STILL EXPECTED AS UVV/S OVERSPREAD THIS
AREA THIS EVENING.  MODERATE INSTABILITY AND SUFFICIENT DEEP LAYER
SHEAR REMAINS IN PLACE FOR ORANIZED CONVECTION...INCLUDING
SUPERCELLS...WITH PRIMARY THREATS OF LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS.
