Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 242 AM PST Tue Feb 4 2025 .SYNOPSIS...Very warm day today with breezy winds continuing and expected to elevated this afternoon, lasting through tomorrow. Cold front expected to move through the state tonight, bringing in cooler temperatures and increasing chances for isolated rain and snow showers. Active weather this weekend with gradually cooling temperatures. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday Southwesterly flow over Nevada continues to bring in breezy conditions with warmer than normal temperatures. High temperatures today expected in the upper 40s to low 60s, with elevated winds at 20-30 mph, gusts as high as 50 mph across central Nevada today. Late today through tonight, a cold front is expected to move over the state, bringing in cooler temperatures and an increase in chance of isolated rain/snow showers starting from the northwest and propagating southeast. Chances for precipitation from the passing cold front with Humboldt County and northern Elko County having the highest chance between 70-90% while the rest of northern Nevada along the I-80 corridor having chances of 50-70% chance of precipitation. Chances get lower as the front moves southeast towards central Nevada with a 30-50% chance of seeing rain while Tonopah at or below 20% chances. Much of the precipitation is expected as rain as warm temperatures keep snow levels above 7000 feet. Much of the precipitation is expected over northwestern Humboldt County (up to 0.2-0.3 inches) with valleys along I-80 corridor seeing as much as 0.05 inches, while south of I-80 be a little drier with precipitation values up to a trace to 0.02 inches along higher elevations and mountains. Mountains in northern Nevada could see up to 1-2 inches of snow (up to 5 inches over Ruby Mountains). Winds expected to stay elevated throughout the night in central Nevada with the cold front increasing winds for northern Nevada at 20-30 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph. Wednesday, chances for isolated rain/snow showers dissipate in the morning leaving drier conditions with breezy winds up to 20-30 mph, gusts up to 50 mph persisting throughout the day until they begin to dissipate in the afternoon to evening hours. Cooler temperatures from the passing cold front will help keep highs in the 40s for northern Nevada with central Nevada in the 40s to 50s. && .LONG TERM...Thursday through next Monday. Trough energy along the west coast Thursday morning pushes onshore through the day bringing another round of precipitation to Northern and Central Nevada through Friday evening. Snow levels across the northern half of the CWA will be near valley floors with this system, with many locations receiving between a half inch and two inches of snow by Friday evening. Mountains and higher elevation summits across Northern Nevada can expect 3 to 6 inches of new snow, with another foot of snow to the highest peaks in the Ruby Mountains. Warmer air pushing up into Central Nevada will hold snow levels a couple thousand feet higher, generally around 6-7k feet Thursday into Thursday night. Snow levels across central NV lower on Friday to valley floors by the late afternoon as precipitation diminishes. With less precipitation and higher snow levels, Central Nevada will receive less snow, generally around or less than a half inch. Cooler northwesterly flow aloft sets up Friday night, with dry and colder conditions through Monday. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions forecast at all terminal sites through at lest the next 24 hours. South wind gusts near 30 knots are anticipated at KTPH and KELY through Tuesday. South to southwest wind gusts near 25 knots are expected at KWMC until about 04z this evening, winds have lessened, and gusts have ceased for KEKO, and KBAM this evening. Areas of Dust lifted earlier today will continue to settle out as visibility remains reduced at KBAM.
