.UPDATE...Quick update. Decided to issue a Winter Storm Warning
for the Southern Blue Mountain Foothills and North Central Oregon
after reexamining the snowfall forecast. Also decided to keep the
Winter Storm Watch going in the Trout Lake area of the lower
slopes of the Washington Cascades. Rest of the forecast is
unchanged. 78

SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night...Complex forecast
continues as models are having a difficult time resolving where
an axis of heavy snow will setup across the forecast area Saturday
and Saturday night. Before that happens though there will be an
initial round of snow associated with an arctic front and upslope
snow into the eastern mountains/foothills.
For today snow heavy at times will affect all of the Blue Mountains
and once the arctic front moves through the Blue Mountain foothills
will see some light to moderate snow tonight and Friday morning. 07Z
NBM gives at least low end advisory amounts of snow and SREF
Plumes at Walla Walla and Pendleton forecast at least 2 inches of
snow. Would not be surprised to see 3-4 inches in the areas close
to the mountains. So with this in mind will issue winter weather
advisories from 00Z this evening until 18Z Friday.
Will be issuing Winter Storm Warnings for the John day Basin and
Highlands as well as Central Oregon with this forecast release.
Although there is substantial uncertainty in how far north the snow
will get Friday night and Saturday there is high confidence (80%)
that central Oregon will see heavy snow. With a more southern track
becoming favored will be dropping the Winter Storm Watches north
of the Oregon border except the Simcoe Highlands. Latest NBM
Probabilities of 1 inch of snow for the 24 Hour Period ending 12Z
Sunday are only 27 percent in Kennewick and 28 percent in Walla
Walla.
It will be windy today ahead of the cold front with wind advisories
in effect for the lower elevations south of the Tri Cities. HREF
shows 30-70% probabilities of gusts exceeding 45 mph in the advisory
area. The other big story will be the cold. By Saturday high
temperatures will be in the single digits to teens with lows
Saturday night in the single digits above to single digits below
zero. 78
LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday...The extended forecast
period begins with a deep north-northwest flow aloft over the
Pacific Northwest, followed by a building high pressure ridge
aloft. This NNW flow will bring down very cold arctic air into
the forecast area from southwest Canada. The deterministic models
and ensembles are in fair to good agreement with this pattern,
resulting in moderate to high confidence (60-80%). There will
still be some upslope snow showers over the northeast mountains
and the Cascades. However, snow amounts will be very light. High
temperatures on Sunday will only reach 10-15 degrees over the
Lower Columbia Basin and adjacent valleys, Foothills of the Blue
Mountains, north central OR, and in Yakima and Kittitas Counties.
Despite these cold temperatures, Sunday will actually be the
first day of a slow warming trend, after a very cold Saturday.
Nighttime lows Sunday night will be in the single digits, mostly
from 5 below to 5 above zero across the entire CWA. If there is
snow on the ground in the lower elevations, temperatures could get
even colder. Winds will be light in all areas, which will help
temperatures to drop faster.
The drier conditions with light winds will persist into Monday,
except for still a few snow showers over the eastern/northeast
mountains and the Cascades. However, snow amounts will be
negligible. Temperatures on Monday will moderate a couple degrees,
especially over central OR. Monday night's lows will again be in
the single digits, but not as cold with readings of zero to 10
degrees above zero...with some localized spots 10 to 15 degrees
(mainly central OR and the John Day Basin). Models and ensembles
are still in fair to good agreement, so once again confidence is
moderate to high (60-80%) on both the weather pattern and
temperatures on Monday.
On Tuesday, the upper ridge will weaken and allow an upper trough
to move down from the northwest. There are greater differences
between the models, especially the deterministic GFS and ECMWF.
However, the overall trend is the same, with moisture moving down
from the northwest with a shortwave weather disturbance. Chances
of snow (except mixed snow and rain in central OR) will blanket
the forecast area by Tuesday afternoon. However, snow amounts will
be light.
These conditions will persist through Wednesday, with chance pops
(30-50%) on Tuesday, increasing to likely pops (55-70%) on
Wednesday. High temperatures on Wednesday look to remain in the
20s from the Blue Mountains Foothills and north central OR
northward. South of there, high temperatures will increase to the
30s to near 40s, especially in central OR. This will result in
snow mixing with, and possibly changing over to rain there.
Elsewhere should stay snow. Due to the differences between the
models with the pattern, there is only low to moderate confidence
(20-50%) that the northern Blue Mountains will receive up to 10
inches of snow (enough for an Winter Weather Advisory, if not a
warning). The WA Cascades will also have the potential to receive
heavy snow (10-15 inches on the crest of the WA Cascades). The OR
Cascades have the potential to receive less than highlight
amounts, as the precipitation may change to rain, with snow levels
rising to 4000-5000 ft MSL by late Wednesday. Looking at the
cluster analysis for Wednesday (day 6), there is significant
variance between clusters, especially with phase of the upper
troughs and ridges as well as amplitude to a lesser extent.
Temperatures will increase to the lower to mid 30s north and mid
30s to around 40 south on Thursday. However, believe the models
are mixing out the cold air trapped in the Lower Columbia Basin
and adjacent valleys and lower elevations too quickly, which is
usually the case. Therefore there is low confidence (20-30%) in
the temperature forecast for Thursday in the lower elevations.
All of the models are showing an upper ridge building back over
the forecast area on Thursday. However, the NBM wants to keep at
least precipitation probabilities of 30-60%, with the greatest
over the northern Blues and the Cascades (especially the WA
Cascades). Cluster analysis for Thursday shows very significant
variance between the clusters. With all these discrepancies,
forecast confidence for Thursday is low (20-30%).
Except for some locally breezy south winds in the Grande Ronde
Valley at times, winds are expected to be light and mostly less
than 10 Kts through the long term period. 88
AVIATION...12z TAFs...VFR conditions will persist through late
this morning at KDLS, KPDT, KRDM, KBDN, KYKM, and KPSC. KALW has
MVFR conditions at this time due to low CIGs, and it will likely
remain MVFR through this morning. An arctic front will drop down
from the north bringing increasing chances of snow for all
terminals, first at the northern terminals, working its way
southward to the southern terminals (KRDM and KBDN). Conditions
will then deteriorate this afternoon and evening with lowering
CIGs and VIS as snow begins with the arctic front. VIS will drop
to mostly 2-5 miles in -SN. Snow will persist through tonight,
with LIFR and VLIFR possible after 00Z this afternoon. There will
be windy conditions today, with wind speeds of at least 20-30 kts
and gusts to 45-50 kts through the day today at all terminals.
These winds will diminish from north to south overnight tonight.
