Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 1207 AM PST Tue Nov 12 2024 .SYNOPSIS... A trough of low pressure will pass across Northern and Central Nevada this morning. Snow showers associated with this trough of low pressure will end this morning. The next storm system will impact Northern and Central Nevada Thursday night through Saturday afternoon, resulting in the likelihood of precipitation. The majority of this precipitation will fall Friday. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night A trough of low pressure will progress eastward through Northern and Central Nevada this morning. Snow showers associated with this trough of low pressure will come to an end this morning. Additional accumulations will range from less than one inch in most of the valley to one to two inches on Owyhee to two to four inches in the Jarbidge and Ruby Mountains. High temperatures throughout Northern and Central Nevada this afternoon will be around ten degrees below normal for this time of year. Here are probabilities of maximum temperatures of 45 degrees or lower for select locations in Northern and Central Nevada on Tuesday, November 12th, 2024: Spring Creek - 100% Ely - 100% Eureka - 100% Wells - 100% Austin - 100% Jackpot - 100% Elko - 97% Carlin - 90% Winnemucca - 45% Battle Mountain - 30% Low temperatures across Northern and Central Nevada tonight will be around five degrees below seasonal values. A ridge of high pressure will amplify as it moves through the service area Wednesday. This ridge of high pressure will enter the Central United States Wednesday night. High temperatures throughout Northern and Central Nevada Wednesday afternoon will be around ten degrees warmer than this afternoon. Minimum temperatures across Northern and Central Nevada Wednesday night will be near normal for this time of year. .LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday Continued mild temperatures will continue into Thursday with highs in the 50s for most valleys. Ample cloud cover will be in place in advance of a large trough that will make its way into the Pacific Northwest and eventually Great Basin region Friday. A few showers are expected late Thursday across Humboldt county but impacts will be limited a few hundredths of an inch of rain in valleys and light snow accumulations above 6000 feet. Ensemble members are in close agreement in bringing the next trough and cold front through Nevada Friday. Dropping temperatures and snow levels through Saturday will promote better opportunities for accumulating snow especially Friday night into Saturday where temperatures are expected to be well below freezing. 90th percentile snow amounts have increased from prior model guidance and where many valleys could see up to 3 inches of snow in a higher end scenario. A brief break in the weather expected Saturday night into Sunday morning as the trough advances southeastward before an active upper-wave pattern brings in another trough later Sunday into Monday. Temperatures will generally trend downward through early next week with quite cold temperatures arriving Monday and Tuesday with highs in the 30s and lower 40s. Probabilities of temperatures falling into the single digits are higher than 50% in many valleys in central and northeastern Nevada Monday night. && .AVIATION... A cold front passing through the region this morning is impacting flight rules at all terminals. Conditions will improve from northwest to southeast as the front pushes through the region. VFR conditions exist at KWMC, KBAM, and KTPH by 1200 UTC but MVFR and temporary IFR conditions may exist and KEKO until after 1500 UTC and 0000 UTC at KELY where snow showers persist. CIGs will also gradually improve from west to east through Tuesday morning into the afternoon. Clearing skies are expected at all terminals by late Tuesday evening.
