Cumulative rainfall for 2024 from the start of the year through mid September was generally above average with just a few times dropping down to average. However, from mid September through the entire month of October, virtually no appreciable rain fell. Although October is typically one of the driest local months, usually a few inches of rain fall. This short-term dry spell resulted in the development of severe drought conditions across southwest Mississippi that continued into November. However, within the first couple weeks of the month, multiple rain events brough 3 to 6 inches of rain across the region. D2 drought conditions then ended after those events.
