Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 924 AM PST Sun Nov 19 2023 .SYNOPSIS...A cold front passing over our region this morning will bring widespread strong north winds across our region that will persist tonight and Monday. A ridge of high pressure will build in for Tuesday and Wednesday before a trough starts to drop down from the north for the holiday weekend. && .UPDATE...At 9 am, a front was moving south through the Las Vegas Valley producing northwest wind gusts between 35 and 55 mph. In Las Vegas, we are expecting the strongest winds through about noon or 1 pm this afternoon with another push of advisory level winds above 40 mph after 9 pm tonight. Between those two periods, windy conditions will continue with widespread gusts of 30-40 mph. A Wind Advisory remains in effect through 1 PM Monday afternoon for all of our southern Nevada zones, most of our southern California zones, and the Colorado River Valley as far south as Laughlin and Bullhead City. Winds this strong will make driving particularly challenging for high profile vehicles traveling along east to west oriented highways including I-15 and I-40. Drivers should use extra caution today and tonight. Radar imagery and lightning detection network data currently show thunderstorm activity over far northern Mohave County where storms will be possible for the next several hours. Shower and thunderstorm chances will continue in the far northeastern portions of Mohave County through late afternoon. Otherwise, expect the sky to clear elsewhere by this afternoon and expect strong winds to continue through Monday morning across much of the area before decreasing Monday afternoon. && .PREV DISCUSSION...250 AM PST Sun Nov 19 2023... .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday. Strong and widespread northwest winds gusting over 40 mph developing across our region today will be the main weather concern as a vigorous trough brushes southern Nevada while digging over the Four Corners States. Brief scattered showers, with snow showers down to elevations near 5500 feet, will primarily occur over Lincoln and northern Mohave counties. Only a dusting of snow is expected. The blast of northwest winds should actually strengthen tonight into Monday morning then gusts decrease to less than 30 mph Monday afternoon across much of southern Nevada and Inyo County, California according to the latest HREF and NBM. Gusts over 40 mph will persist through late Monday afternoon along the lower Colorado River Valley and across much of the central and eastern San Bernardino County deserts. The Wind Advisory was expanded and extended through Monday afternoon to address these trends. Though speeds will decrease, pesky north winds gusting 20-30 mph will linger into Monday night...especially along the Colorado River Valley. High temperatures will lower 5-7 degrees today then another 4-5 degrees on Monday with readings in the lower 60s in Las Vegas and the Mojave Desert zones Monday afternoon. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through Sunday. An amplified ridge along the West Coast will nose into the Great Basin and Desert Southwest Tuesday then flatten in response to another trough sliding over the Pacific Northwest and heading our way for Thanksgiving Day. Model ensembles indicate additional energy and cold air will drop out of Western Canada Friday through Sunday. This pattern will support increasing north winds and a cooling trend going into the holiday weekend with high temps dipping into the mid 50s for Las Vegas and the surrounding deserts. Moisture will be limited so chances for precipitation are generally less than 15 percent within our forecast area. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Breezy southwesterly winds will shift to a more westerly direction during the early morning hours. These breezy westerly winds will be brief, as gusty northwesterly winds will punch into the valley around mid-morning as a front moves through. Showers will clip the northern portion of the valley with CIGS around 6-8 kft during the brief period of westerly winds out ahead of the front. These low CIGS will quickly dissipate with the passage of the front. Gusty north-northwesterly winds will continue to impact the terminal area through the afternoon and evening hours. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Winds at KDAG will favor a more westerly component through the evening hours. 30-40 knot westerly wind gusts are expected through the morning hours with gusts decreasing slightly in the afternoon. KBIH will favor a northerly direction with 25-35 knot gust through tomorrow evening. KEED and KIFP will pick up and swing around to the north during the late morning hours and will see 20-30 knot wind gusts through the evening hours. KHND and KVGT will see breezy west-southwesterly winds, vicinity showers, and 6-8 kft CIGS during the early morning hours before the front passes through later this morning.
