Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 1008 AM MST Sun Nov 19 2023 .UPDATE... Morning updated to adjust PoPs, snow levels and snow totals for portions of the area based on trends with high resolution near- term models. Continuing to see a strong signal in the guidance for the potential for a localized area of accumulating snow later today, namely around Pocatello and into the surrounding higher terrain later tonight. Have increased snow amounts significantly in this area in the 1-2 inch range for the city and surrounding benches. It should be stressed however that there remains some uncertainty as temperatures are in the lower 40s this morning with rain continuing to fall. Based on forecast soundings however, feel that a changeover to a rain/snow mix will occur by mid- afternoon and likely all snow by 6PM and this is not being reflected well in the NBM. It will take some time for snow to begin to accumulate on roadways but confidence is starting to increase that this may occur later this evening and into the overnight hours so the forecast needed to be updated to account for this. At a minimum, a Special Weather Statement will likely be issued in the next few hours, if trends continue, to account for this increasing snow potential but a Winter Weather Advisory isn't being ruled out either. Wind gusts were widespread 50 to 70 mph on the 19th as a cold front moved through the Raft River Region. A peak of 67 mph was measured near Idahome.
A strong cold front changed rain to snow and combined with strong winds to bring power outages reported by Idaho Power for over 1,500 people in Power, Bingham and Bannock Counties in the Aberdeen, Crystal and Pocatello areas. A total of 2 to 5 inches of snow fell in the Pocatello and American Falls region.
