Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 305 PM PST Wed Jan 4 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Another system has arrived bringing rain, mixed type precip, and snow across NV with windy conditions building throughout the CWA and in particular northwest Nye County Wednesday evening into Thursday evening. Friday through Sunday looks to be calm. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday night. For tonight an upper level ridge continues to traverse west to across NV. Snow showers are forecast for higher mountain elevations for this evening along with valleys expected to receive rain and possibly a rain/snow mix for some valleys across N.Nye, Lander Eureka, and Humboldt counties. South/southeast surface winds will also become windier through the evening with gusts 40+ mph expected across portions of central Nevada. Winds will be strongest across NW Nye County and a wind advisory is in effect until 10am PST Thursday morning. Low temperatures are expected to be in the low 20s for most of Elko county except the eastern portion where lows will reach the upper 20s. The remainder of the CWA will have low temperature readings in the mid 20s to low 30s. For Thursday and Thursday night. A modest surface cold front associated with a trough begins moving across the region from west to east. Elko, White Pine, and Nye counties are forecast to receive higher amounts of snow ranging from 6-8" in the mountains to 1-2" in the valleys. The rest of the CWA will receive less snow totals in the 0.5-1" range. High temperatures will be in the mid 30s to low 40's for most of the region allowing precip to be of the rain variety with most valleys expected to receive anywhere from 0.01" to 0.10" and Nye county receiving a few tenths more until temperatures begin to fall with the approaching cold front in the evening turning rain into snow. Expect lighter winds during the day becoming calm in the evening. LONG TERM...Friday to next Thursday Lingering snow showers will end in Elko and White Pine counties Friday morning with the rest of the day in northern and central Nevada dry with high temperatures in the 30s/40s. Saturday will remain dry too with highs in the 30s for Elko and White Pine counties but reaching 40 degrees elsewhere. Sunday, a ridge moves over the region bringing mostly dry conditions. A few scattered snow showers are possible in northern Nevada but accumulation is not expected. High temperatures will warm into the middle 30s in Elko and White Pine counties with middle 40s elsewhere with morning lows in the teens to middle twenties to end the weekend. Moisture from a coastal low could reach northern Nevada late on Monday bringing a return of valley rain then snow showers through early Wednesday. Temperatures remain their warming trend the beginning of next week as southerly winds dominate. This is leading to rising snow levels and a greater chance of rain versus snow showers for valley locations. Mountain areas and some passes remain cool resulting in a longer period of snow versus rain. However, the QPF amounts during this time frame range from 0.01 to 0.10 in valleys leading to a trace of snow in the valleys. Higher QPF amounts and snowfall totals are expected in the mountains. Sustained winds and gusts will increase ahead of the passage but remain below waring criteria. High temperatures early next week could range from the upper 30s to mid-40s with lows in the && .Aviation... Low cloud ceilings will persist at KWMC, KEKO, KBAM, KELY through 0200Z 1/5. Periods of IFR to MVFR conditions will persist through 00Z Friday at KWMC, KELY, KTPH with rain and snow showers.
