The final in a series of storm systems will bring additional rain, low elevation snow, and gusty winds through Wednesday. Dry weather is forecast Thursday and Friday with freezing temperatures across the San Joaquin Valley both mornings. Precipitation chances return this weekend, mainly from Fresno County northward. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 1245 PM PST Tue Feb 28 2023/ Latest radar imagery shows light showers have developed over the Central Valley into the Sierra and adjacent foothills, mainly Fresno County northward. More activity is expected later this afternoon into tonight. Significant snow will fall at elevations above 2,000 feet, at least in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for the Sierra foothill zones, while a Blizzard Warning remains in effect for the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada until Wednesday afternoon. From late tonight until Wednesday morning, a dusting of snow is likely to occur down to around 1,000 feet, though mainly in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Otherwise, expect at least a few inches of inches of snow at around 2,000 feet. As for the Kern County desert, a dusting up to an inch of snow is likely to occur. Probabilities for 0.1 inch of snow in these areas are around 35 to 60 percent in the desert, though with a lesser chance (near 20 percent) at Ridgecrest. Colder than normal temperatures will continue over the next few nights/mornings, although it appears widespread freezing in the Central Valley won't occur until late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning. A Freeze Warning is now in effect for much of the San Joaquin Valley on Thursday morning, as low temepratures fall to around 28 to 32 degrees at many locations. We have kept the Freeze Watch for Friday for now. The probabilities of freezing temperatures in the valley are 70 to 80 percent for Thursday. The probabilities are similar on Friday morning, though generally in the outlying areas. The next storm arrives on Saturday that brings yet another opportunity for rain and mountain snow. It appears this storm won't be as cold, although snow levels could rise to around 3,500 to 4,000 feet initially. Precipitation is forecast for areas mainly north of Kern County, including over the weekend into early next week. As of this writing, rain and snow amounts do not appear nearly as high as with the recent storms. The highest precipitation amounts are projected towards Mariposa County and Yosemite, where several inches to near a foot of snow is possible with around 0.50 inch to 1.00 inch of liquid during Saturday evening until Sunday night. Lesser amounts will accumulate elsewhere. && .AVIATION... Mountain obscuring IFR conditions in rain and snow. Local MVFR/IFR in rain across the San Joaquin Valley. Public report of a tree down on the roadway on N. Pleasant Ave. just north of W. Bullard Ave. blocking all lanes and landing on top of a vehicle. The tree was 40 feet long and 2 feet in diameter.
