What happened

The episode as NWS OUN wrote it up.

A moderately strong jet stream rounded the base of an upper level trough located over central Rocky Mountains and moved east toward the southern plains. Surface low pressure developed over southwest Kansas with a cold front trailing southwest into the western Texas panhandle, and a dry line over the eastern Texas panhandle. Several thunderstorms were ongoing during the early morning hours as the low-level jet moved north through western Oklahoma and Kansas. These thunderstorms were not severe with only brief heavy rain and gusty south winds. During the afternoon, widespread thunderstorms developed over much of the western half of Oklahoma. Several became severe with hail up to golf ball size and winds over 60 mph. Some wind damage was reported in the Oklahoma City metro area.

TORNADOES ARE POSSIBLE WITH ANY STORM THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. A
MORE DISTINCT THREAT FOR TORNADOES...HOWEVER...MAY DEVELOP IN THE
MODERATE RISK AREA DURING THE EVENING...IF DISCRETE SUPERCELLS BEGIN
TO INTERACT WITH STRENGTHENING LOW LEVEL WINDS.

TONIGHT. SEVERE WEATHER MAY DEVELOP VERY QUICKLY. PEOPLE ARE URGED
TO REVIEW SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY RULES AND STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER
