Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.
A strong low pressure was located over northeast Kansas during the afternoon and evening hours of the 14th. The low moved very slowly however a moderate transport of moisture took place ahead of the low. South winds of 25 to 30 kts pushed deep moisture north into Iowa. A nearly stationary warm front was located to the south of Iowa, setting the stage for heavy rainfall. Precipitable water values were around 1.4 inches during the early stages of the event. Drier air moved in from the southeast during the late evening hours, reducing the intense rainfall. A band of showers and thunderstorms set up across Iowa and remained stationary. This caused flash flooding in Adair, Guthrie, and Cass Counties and rainfall of 1 to as much as 2 inches per hour pelted the area. Several highways were closed as flood waters flowed over them. In Cass County, 3.26 inches fell in Anita in under 3 hours, with 1.85 inches of that falling in just 55 minutes. In Adair, nearly 5 inches of rain fell for the day.
