Flooding and Hail in Oklahoma, June 16 to 19, 2005

Strong winds caused some damage at a campground at Little Sahara State Park. A 30 foot travel trailer was moved twelve inches sideways off all four jacks. An 18 foot travel trailer was also spun around hitting a pick-up. A propane tank cover near the trailers ended up a quarter of a mile away. Approximately 200 yards from the campers, the roof was taken off the Little Sahara Power Sports building. Golf ball hail also caused damage.

The golf ball size hail along with strong winds caused damage to 5 campers and 5 trucks at the Little Sahara State Park. Siding on the campers was cut. Holes were found in the doors. A roof vent was also shattered.

Shop doors were ripped off.

One foot diameter trees downed. Power poles were also downed.

Ten to twelve inch diameter trees were uprooted. Awnings were blown down. Shingles were also blown off roofs. A brick wall of a car wash collapsed on a car.

In Hennessey, a gas station awning was blown down onto the gas pumps. Two power poles were snapped. Several businesses had sign damage. Numerous tree limbs downed. A chain link fence was also downed. A store, just east of town on Highway 51, had major damage. The canopy and roof were blown off. A plate glass window was also broken. Further east of Hennessey to the Kingfisher-Logan county line, widespread tree damage and several barns sustained roof damage.

Power lines were downed, briefly closing Highway 183.

A barn door blew off hitting a nearby house putting a hole in the roof. The barn also sustained some roof damage. About a mile east of the barn, the pillars of a front porch were picked up and set down at an angle.

The roof was ripped off a grain elevator with the rest of the structure collapsing in on itself. Downed trees and power lines caused a brief closing of Highway 34. Large tree limbs fell onto two vehicles. Several large trees were also uprooted. One tree was split.

A large water tank at the local CO-OP was moved six blocks. Significant tree damage was reported. A large tree fell on a car. A trampoline became airborne and hit the house taking a corner of the roof off. The trampoline was found wrapped around a barb-wire fence.

A 15 inch diameter tree was downed onto a house.

Multiple power poles and power lines were downed. There was also some minor tree damage.

Eight to ten inch diameter trees were downed.

An oil tank battery was struck by lightning and caught fire.

Power poles were downed from mile marker 83 to 89 on Interstate 44. The interstate was closed from 0130 to 0315 CDT. Near mile marker 85, big tree limbs were downed. A small water tower and outbuildings were also blown over on the south side of the interstate near mile marker 90.

Extensive damage occurred in the River Bend Housing addition. A damage area one to two miles long (north to south) and two to three miles wide (east to west) was reported. Seventeen homes in the addition were damaged. One home that was partially built was completely destroyed. Another 5 homes sustained major damage, with half of the roof of one home completely ripped off. Eleven homes sustained minor damage mainly consisting of shingle damage, damage to garage doors, and windows broken. The Friends School Cafeteria nearby also sustained major roof damage. Widespread tree damage was also reported in the area.

A large lightning instrumentation tower was downed along Highway 9. One leg of the tower snapped. Another large tower nearby was also downed. Trees were also snapped.

A storage shed and its contents were blown from a mobile home community just north of the Norman Spur of Interstate 44, near mile marker 103.

Significant damage to trees and fences were reported one mile east of Highway 76 and just south of the Norman Spur of Interstate 44.

Considerable damage occurred on the east side of town with large limbs down. Trees were also split and blown over.

The Cimarron River basin in northwestern Oklahoma was visited again by minor to moderate flooding after two more days of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall plagued the region. The river gage site near Waynoka was the first to rise above flood stage as the Cimarron River crested briefly at a flood stage of 8.0 feet at 11:30 am CST on June 16. The Cimarron River remained just below flood stage until the slow-moving thunderstorms during the evening and overnight hours of June 16-17 brought a third crest above the moderate flood level of 10 feet during the month of June. The Cimarron River near Waynoka crested at 10.6 feet at 12:00 pm CST on June 17, and remained above flood stage from 11:00 pm CST on June 16 until 7:00 pm CST on June 19.

Strong winds were observed across parts of southern Oklahoma. These winds were due to a gust front that developed and moved ahead of a cluster of severe thunderstorms. In some cases these winds occurred 30 miles or more ahead of the thunderstorms. The wind gusts ranged from 60 to 65 mph. Along with numerous tree limbs downed, a large tree was downed at the city hall in Snyder in Kiowa county.

Large tree limbs were reported down on Main Street, east of Porter Avenue.

One business was reported to have the roof blown off.

Heavy tree damage occurred in approximately a mile long area around mile marker 43 on Interstate 35. Power lines were also downed about half a mile east of the interstate in the same area.

Widespread tree damage occurred across the county. The trees were reported to be between 12 and 20 inches in diameter. A few of the trees fell on roadways.
