AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEWPORT/MOREHEAD CITY NC 220 PM EDT TUE MAY 22 2001 MAIN FOCUS OF FCST WILL BE THREAT OF SVR WEATHER LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT AHEAD OF APPROACHING COLD FRONT. FRONT WILL SLOW AS IS NEARS THE COAST...LOSING ITS PUSH AS IT MOVES INTO THE STRONG RIDGE IN THE WRN ATLANTIC. MODELS ALL SHOW A SPLIT OF UVM AND MOISTURE TO THE N AND S OF OUR CWA FOR THE EARLY PART OF THE EVENING. HOWEVER...GIVEN CURRENT INSTABILITY THINK IF A SQUALL LINE DEVELOPS TO OUR W OR SW IT WILL HOLD TOGETHER AND PUSH THROUGH OUR AREA. WITH FRONT SLOWING UP ACROSS OUR AREA THREAT OF SHOWERS AND TSTMS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH LATE TONIGHT INLAND AND INTO THE MORNING ON THE COAST. WILL INCREASE POPS TO 60 FOR TONIGHT. WILL CONT 20 TO 30 POPS ALONG THE COAST FOR EARLY WED. WITH FRONT SLOW TO MOVE OFF THE COAST EXPECT LOW CLOUDS TO LINGER INTO THE AFTERNOON...ESPECIALLY ALONG THE COAST. HIGHS ON WED WILL BE LIMITED TO 75 TO 80 WITH CLOUDS LIMITING SUNSHINE. EXCEPTION MIGHT BE COASTAL PLAIN WHICH WILL SEE MORE BREAKS EARLIER AND MAY REACH LOWER 80S. Numerous trees were blown down just south of Williamston, closing Highway 17 for a period of time. A potion of a barn was also destroyed near Williamston. High winds forced an SUV off of the road and into a ditch just south of Williamston. Nickel size hail was also reported.
