Heat in New Jersey, June 26 to 30, 2001
A large ridge of high pressure both at the surface and aloft along the western Atlantic Ocean produced six consecutive days of heat and increasing humidity across most of New Jersey from June 26th through July 1st. A westerly surface flow even pushed shore areas into the record breaking 90s on the 27th and 28th.

A large ridge of high pressure both at the surface and aloft along the western Atlantic Ocean produced six consecutive days of heat and increasing humidity across most of New Jersey from June 26th through July 1st. A westerly surface flow even pushed shore areas into the record breaking 90s on the 27th and 28th. A cold front broke the excessive heat with strong to severe thunderstorms on July 1st. High temperatures reached into the mid 90s and combined with the humid air mass produced afternoon heat indices of around 100 degrees, especially in urban centers in the southwest part of the state. The excessive heat caused Interstate 80 to buckle in Morris County near Parsippany on the 30th. June 28th and 30th were the hottest days for most locations. Highest temperatures included 96 degrees in New Lisbon (Burlington County), 95 degrees in Sandy Hook (Monmouth County) and Pennsauken (Camden County), 94 degrees at both the Atlantic City State Marina and the International Airport, Lumberton (Burlington County) and West Deptford (Gloucester County), 93 degrees in Mount Holly (Burlington County), Trenton (Mercer County) and Wildwood (Cape May County), 92 degrees in Millville (Cumberland County), Chatham (Morris County) and New Brunswick (Middlesex County) and 91 degrees in Somerville (Somerset County). At the Atlantic City State Marina, the high temperature of 94 degrees on the 28th set a new record for the date. The high temperature of 91 degrees the previous day tied the record for the date.
