Hail and Damaging Winds in New York, June 11, 2000

A strong back door cold front worked across the Mid Hudson Valley during the afternoon hours of June 11. The air mass ahead of this boundary was hot, humid and unstable. A strong upper level disturbance propagated along the front and set the stage for the second severe weather event to hit this area in two weeks. Numerous thunderstorm cells, some of which became severe, erupted in the Mid Hudson Valley. A thunderstorm deposited dime size hail at Pine Plains in Dutchess county and produced wind damage at Stanfordville. Another storm produced wind gusts to 82 mph at the Dutchess County Airport where there was a balloon festival going on at the time. The wind blew tables, tents, chairs and balloons across the fields. Tents were blown down, and some people were briefly trapped in one of them. Airplanes parked nearby from the airport sustatined damage from an airborne tent. Many vendors also suffered damage to their tents. Later in the afternoon, another round of thunderstorms deposited two inch diameter hail at Stockport in Columbia county. Thunderstorms produced local wind damage at Plattekill, New Paltz and Gardiner in Ulster County. The damage consisted of mainly downed trees and large tree limbs. The storms left as many as 7,500 customers without power throughout the Mid Hudson Valley.
