A large ridge of high pressure at both the surface and aloft covered the eastern half of the United States as the work week began on March 6th. This ridge remained nearly stationary across the Southeastern United States from the 7th through the 9th. A mild southwest flow that began the afternoon of the 6th became progressively warmer as the work week continued. A backdoor cold front stalled as it tried to move through the northeastern part of the state on the 8th as the ridge of high pressure held firm. This front moved northeast into New England on the 9th. For most of the state, the warmest day was the 8th as record breaking readings reached as warm as 80 degrees. In nearby Philadelphia this was the earliest in the calendar year that a high of 80 degrees ever occurred. Some high level cloudiness on the 9th prevented temperatures from reaching the 80s again, but many locations again set new record highs for the date. A series of cold frontal passages on the 10th and a subsequent onshore flow on the weekend (11th and 12th) brought temperatures down to seasonal levels. Along the immediate shore, the warmest day was the 10th as the strong northwest winds prevented the sea breeze from developing.The highest readings (on the 8th unless specified) included 80 degrees in Millville (Cumberland County), West Deptford (Gloucester County), Cherry Hill (Camden County), Estell Manor (Atlantic County) and New Lisbon (Burlington County), 79 degrees in Atsion (on the 9th in Burlington County), Lumberton (Burlington County), Somerdale and Pennsauken (Camden County), 78 degrees in at the Atlantic City International Airport (on the 9th in Atlantic County), Mount Holly (Burlington County), Trenton (Mercer County), Flemington (Hunterdon County) and Belvidere (Warren County), 77 degrees in Sussex (Sussex County), Hightstown (Mercer County) and Wildwood (Cape May County), 76 degrees in Andover (Sussex County) and Somerville (Somerset County), 75 degrees in New Brunswick (on the 9th in Middlesex County), Belmar (on the 9th in Monmouth County), and Long Valley (Morris County), 74 degrees in Freehold (Monmouth County) on the 9th, 68 degrees at the Marina within Atlantic City on the 10th and 67 degrees in Beach Haven (Ocean County) on the 10th. New daily high temperature records were set on both the 8th (77 degrees) and the 9th (78 degrees) at the Atlantic City International Airport and on the 10th (68 degrees) at the Marina within Atlantic City.
