The seasons first spring type weather system moved through the area on the 8th into the early morning hours of the 9th. Intense low pressure moved out of the Rockies into the plains of Nebraska. Eventually, the low moved across Iowa and passed to the northeast. The situation had the potential of becoming a serious severe weather event if not for the fact that the dry slot swept northeast across Iowa. In the sinking air under the dry slot, strong southerly winds developed during the day on the 8th. The winds gradually swung around to the southwest and eventually the northwest as the low passed. Winds gusted to near 60 MPH in many areas, with an official measured wind speed of 60 MPH at the Ottumwa Airport. All of the state reported winds of at least 40 to 50 MPH. Sustained winds were in the 30 to 40 MPH range throughout the day until past midnight. Damage was limited with the system since the leaves were not yet on the trees. There were spotty reports of power outages as some tree limbs were blown onto power lines. There was also some other spotty damage, but no major damage reported.
