High Wind, Ottawa

A semi truck was blown over on a State Route 269 exit ramp in Ottawa County. The driver was trapped for three hours, but suffered only minor injuries. Winds gusting to 60 miles per hour derailed a train as it was crossing Sandusky Bay in Erie County. Most of the cars were empty and therefore light and easily blown over. Nineteen cars fell into the water, and another 60 jumped the tracks and remained on the causeway. Clean-up was hampered due to low water on Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay which prevented barges with cranes from getting to the site. Some of the train cars were pushed into the bay to clear the tracks. Trains were then able to resume running on the evening of the same day.
