The combination of a slowly retreating high pressure system east of New England and a low pressure system that rapidly intensified as it moved north-northeast north of Lake Superior, produced high winds.Peak wind gusts were estimated at 70 mph in Kearny (Hudson County). The roof of Roval Lumber and Millwork Co. was ripped off and a retaining concrete wall came down. In Montclair (Essex County), a tree was downed.
