Forecast Summary:

A few showers and thunderstorms remain possible this morning before
shifting east by noon. There is a small chance for redevelopment
this afternoon in western Iowa, but the real story into Monday will
be warming temperatures. Heat indices well over 100 are forecast
Monday, ahead of a cold front settling into the region. That front
may trigger a few thunderstorms Monday night through Tuesday night.
Then another cold front late in the week should cool temps down a
bit Friday and Saturday.

Today and Monday:

Mid level shortwave trough, noted in RAP objective analysis and
satellite loops, extended from the eastern Dakotas into eastern
Nebraska this morning. Bulk of thunderstorm activity tied to this
feature had pushed east into central Iowa, but a few storms lingered
across central and eastern Nebraska. As shortwave moves east this
morning, so to will associated convection. However decreasing low
level jet and waning instability should limit coverage through mid
morning. Cooler temperatures aloft along axis of shortwave are
forecast to resides across central Iowa into northern Missouri this
afternoon. Steepening lapse rates and low level moisture should
provide ingredients for convection in those areas, and we may see a
few of storms close to our western Iowa counties.

Otherwise a slow decrease in cloud cover today and returning
southerly winds will help temperatures rebound back toward 90 this
afternoon west of any convection. Surface dew points over 70 are
likely for a good part of our area as well, pushing heat indices
toward 100.

Even warmer temperatures are expected Monday as heights rise and 850
temps warm into the upper 20s C ahead of upper trough progressing
toward the Northern Plains. Highs well into the 90s along with 70F
or higher dew points will put heat indices well into the triple
digits for much of our CWA.

Monday night through Tuesday night:

Cold front ahead of Northern Plains upper trough should be
approaching northeast Nebraska early Monday evening. While MLCAPE
over 2000 J/kg is advertised in our area, mid level warm
temperatures will likely limit widespread convection as front
settles into our area Monday night. Still, if storms do fire, some
severe wind gusts could occur.

Otherwise slightly cooler temperatures are expected Tuesday as front
stalls in or close to our area. Pooling moisture along weak frontal
convergence zone will provide fuel for storms, but forcing appears
to be well displaced northeast where better mid level flow will
reside. Again, instability progs suggest sufficient buoyancy for
storms, but weak shear should limit organization.

Wednesday through Saturday:

Northwest mid level flow behind exiting trough is forecast to remain
in place into the weekend. We may see a small increase in heights
Wednesday and Thursday, allowing slightly warmer temperatures those
two days. A potent shortwave is forecast to drive a surface front
into the region Thursday afternoon and evening, with cooler
temperatures settling in for Friday and Saturday. There are widely
varying model solutions in regards to potential convection along
Thursday's cold front, so our current rain chances are fairly low.
However, there is certainly a signal for scattered storms Thursday
afternoon and evening for at least southeast Nebraska and southwest
Iowa.

Issued at 1232 PM CDT Sun Aug 8 2021

A quiet TAF period is on tap for the area, as mostly clear skies
return along with light south to southwesterly winds. Winds speeds
this afternoon of around 10-12 kts are expected to fall to 5 kts
or less overnight, before picking back up to around 10 kts out of
the south to southeast by the end of the period. Short-term models
are suggesting that there may be an area of low stratus or fog
that could impact the KOMA terminal, but is too low-confidence to
include in the TAF at this time. Chances get better for those
conditions north and east of KOMA. Looking beyond the TAF period,
rain and storm chances will try to make another appearance late
Monday.
