The Flash Flood Watch for portions of west central Illinois and
northeast Missouri has been cancelled. While additional rainfall
is expected overnight, the focus for heavy rainfall has shifted
to the south. Therefore, the threat for additional flash flooding
over far northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois has
dminished. Further south, additional heavy rain is expected to

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS CANCELLED...

Most of the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Gordon have moved east 
of the Mississippi River so the Flash Flood Watch for portions of
Illinois and all of Missouri has been cancelled. As Gordon moved 
through the area overnight, it dropped well over 4 inches of rain 
across a large portion of the area.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of south central Illinois...including the following 
  counties...Bond IL...Clinton IL...Fayette IL...Marion IL... 
  Montgomery IL and Washington IL. 

* through Sunday morning

* The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Gordon will continue to push
  east-northeast through Illinois. Rich tropical moisture will
  continue to produce additional heavy rainfall across the watch
  area through this evening. The greatest threat for heavy
  rainfall will remain across portions of southern Illinois.
  Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely through this
  evening with locally higher amounts possible. 

* Heavy rainfall will result in flooding of low lying or poor 
  drainage areas...and ultimately dangerous flash flooding on 
  smaller creeks and streams. Significant rises on larger 
  streams and rivers will also be possible. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flash Flood Watch is advanced notice that conditions are
favorable that may lead to flash flooding. People in the Watch
area, especially in flood prone areas, should use this time to
make preparations just in case. Stay informed, and be ready for
quick action if flooding is observed or if a Flash Flood Warning
is issued.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS CANCELLED...

The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Gordon have moved out of the
region, so the Flash Flood Watch for a portion of south central 
Illinois has been cancelled. As Gordon moved through the region,
it brought up to 6" of rain to some locations, and widespread 
areas over 3". 

The cold front that brought additional areas of rain to the
forecast area over the last several days will remain in place this
afternoon and into the evening. This has resulted in additional
areas of light to moderate rain, which should also last into the
evening. Up to an additional 1/4" of rain is possible with these
showers, but no flash flooding is expected. All rain should end by
Sunday morning.

Issued at 839 PM CDT Wed Sep 5 2018

Have updated PoPs overnight based on latest mdl guidance. Believe
that ongoing SHRA over NE MO into west central IL will diminish
slightly over the next couple of hours as low level forcing
weakens. However, as the LLJ increases across portions of central
MO around Midnight, expect precip to refocus over this region and
spread newd into NE MO and west central IL and persist into Thurs
morning. A concern for overnight will be precip amounts. While
expecting a nearly continuous rain is expected from portions of
central into NE MO and west central IL, it appears that thunder
will be fairly limited overnight. This shud reduce the threat for
heavy rainfall. This in turn will be offset by training. Do not
feel confident enuf in a Flash Flood threat to go with a watch at
this point. However, the rainfall overnight will certainly prime
the region for a flood threat later this week in addition to the
current river flood threat.

.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Thursday Afternoon)

The cold front extending SW from a surface low in SE Canada
continues it's march toward the Mid-Mississippi Valley. The front is
just beginning to push into the CWA, and is generating widespread
showers and scattered thunderstorms. The front will stall out across
NE MO and west central IL this evening, and will remain the focus
for precip chances through the night. Meanwhile, isolated to
scattered convection across east central MO and SW IL will persist
through the afternoon, tapering off as we lose diurnal heating.

Upper level flow will remain fairly weak tomorrow, keeping the
baroclinic zone laid out across NE MO and west central IL.
Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Gordon will continue its push NW,
allowing for deep moisture to build into the region, pushing PWATs
toward 2" across the area. The front and Gordon will likely
result in a couple of focuses for precipitation on Thursday. First
of all, precip should continue along the stalled front across NE
MO/WC IL. Secondly, increasing column moisture coupled with the
outer reaches of Gordon should allow precip chances to increase in
SE MO/SW IL. CAPE is somewhat limited, but certainly sufficient
to support embedded storms.

.LONG TERM...  (Thursday Night through Next Wednesday)

Upper level flow will turn a bit more southwesterly on Friday as a
broad trough moves into the Great Plains. Meanwhile, Gordon will
continue to push to the NW while high pressure simultaneously pushes
south into the Upper Mississippi Valley, shunting the weakening
baroclinic zone a bit farther south. The combination of increasingly
dynamic upper level flow, the stationary front, and the remnants of
Gordon will keep precip chances in place across the area.

From 06-18z Friday, both WPC guidance and superblend are painting
over 2" of QPF, where as the raw synoptic models top out around half
that much. With PWATs around 2" during that period, efficient rain
makers are expected and I'm fairly certain the model amounts will be
exceeded. That said, 2" seems a little excessive for that period, so
I tried to split the difference between WPC/superblend and the raw
models.

The previously mentioned upper trough will continue its push
east, catching the TD Gordon as it reaches NW AR/SW MO early
Saturday morning. At that point, Gordon's track will curve to the
NE and move through southern MO on Saturday. 12z GFS, NAM, and
Euro bring the center of Gordon just south of St Louis on
Saturday night, with highest precip totals focused north and west
of the low track. At this moment, confidence is high that quite a
bit of rain will fall between 06z Saturday and 06z Sunday, and
this will be when the greatest chance for flash flooding will
occur. That said, uncertainty remains with regards to where the
heaviest axis of precipitation will occur, so we will hold off on
a flash flood watch for the time being.

High pressure will build into the region for the early part of
next week, resulting in mostly dry conditions. Temperatures will
be quite a bit cooler than what we've see lately, with highs in
the upper 70s on Monday, pushing into the low to mid 80s by
Wednesday.

.AVIATION...  (For the 06z TAFs through 06z Thursday Night)

Main updates were to delay onset of lower cigs at KCOU/KUIN. A
fair amount of uncertainty exists regarding cigs, especially at
KCOU. IFR cigs currently exist just west of KCOU. Believe at least
some MVFR cigs will develop into KCOU before lifting north of the
area overnight as the precip pulls northward. At KUIN...once the
lower cigs move into the area, these cigs shud remain in place
until Thurs morning. The timing of these cigs lifting may be too
quick as well.

SPECIFICS FOR KSTL/KSUS/KCPS: Little change overall. Light winds
expected. Dry and VFR expected, although, isod to sct TSRA are
expected Thurs afternoon. Coverage is too low to go with more than
a VCTS attm.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of eastern and
central Missouri as well as west central and southwest Illinois.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Thunderstorms are likely tonight across northeast Missouri and
west central Illinois. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms
along and north of I-70 tonight. Severe weather is not expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

There is a chance for thunderstorms and heavy rain through Sunday
over parts of the area. The highest rainfall rates and greatest
rainfall amounts will occur Saturday and Saturday night as
Tropical Depression Gordon interacts with a stalled front along
the I-70 corridor. 4 to 6 inches of rainfall is possible over the
northern half of Missouri and into west central Illinois.
