Updated for 18Z aviation discussion && .AVIATION... 18Z TAF discussion: MVFR/IFR ceilings continue to plague TAF sites across the area this morning. The back edge of the low level cloud deck has cleared GLH and will clear GWO within an hour or two with VFR conditions returning to those areas. Elsewhere, MVFR with brief periods of IFR ceilings will continue into the afternoon and parts of the evening as the cloud deck gradually pushes southeast. By tomorrow morning, scattered shower activity is expected to return to the Pine Belt at HBG/PIB. /TW/ && .DISCUSSION... The potent storm system that brought severe weather and significant flooding to portions of the area yesterday and last night has finally pulled away from the region. A surface cold front was analyzed across the Delta and is expected to continue on a slow eastward treck across Mississippi through the day. The low-level ThetaE axis has shifted east with negative ThetaE and moisture advection in its wake. As such, not expecting any significant rainfall to redevelop today with only a few lingering showers ongoing across the Pine Belt this morning. Went ahead and canceled the flash flood watch early and cleared out the flooding threat in the graphics/HWO. Several areal flood warnings continue across the I-59 corridor where flood waters continue to impact roadways and structures, however water levels will continue to recede. Cloud cover will gradually clear from west to east through the day with temperatures in the mid 60s across southeast Mississippi to low 50s behind the front over the Delta. /TW/ Prior discussion below: Through Tonight: The torrential rainfall that has been causing significant flooding issues all night across the SE MS is finally starting to trend slowly east of our forecast area, but not before dropping 6 to 11 inches of rain over many locations in the Pine Belt. We will be slowly trending away from Flash Flood Warnings and pockets of Flash Flood Emergencies over the next few hours and replacing with Areal Flood Warnings that last into today. The good news is that the rainfall will be gradually exiting to the east through the morning hours today as a cold front pushes into the region with lingering showers after daybreak in mainly eastern MS of a lighter nature. Rivers across a good portion of the forecast area will be rising over the next few days so it will be important to stay in tune to river forecasts. The temperature forecast for today will be a bit tricky, complicated by the fact that some patchy fog and low clouds are trying to build into the region in the wake of the heavy precipitation and just ahead of the cold front gradually working in from the west. Really not anticipating having a widespread dense fog issue this morning, but we may end up advertising a LIMITED dense fog risk for some areas through 9 or 10 am (depending on what transpires over the next few hours). Of course, residual clouds in many areas will limit diurnal temperatures rises and the weak cold air advection will also not be conducive for a great deal of warming. Still, many locations over central and eastern MS may be able to squeak out highs in the mid to upper 60s with a bit of afternoon sunshine. Unfortunately, the frontal boundary clearing just to our southeast today will get too far before stalling, which will basically set the table for overrunning warmth over top of the cool air at the surface as the perturbed southwest flow aloft starts to reinvigorate tonight. The result will be an increase in clouds tonight from south to north with at least slight chances of light rain returning late tonight in southern zones. Temperatures will be far too warm down there to worry about any wintry precipitation, but lows in northern zones may approach freezing due to slightly better radiational cooling potential and access to deeper cold air. /BB/ Saturday through Thursday: With the frontal boundary expected to stall out along the Gulf Coast as it loses upper-level support, the warm and humid airmass will not be displaced too far to our south through the weekend. In fact with the next upper-level shortwave trough digging over northern Mexico, southwesterly flow aloft will see an increase in atmospheric moisture across our area and an increasing chance for rain as the atmosphere saturates. Have included a mention for a slight chance of thunderstorms starting Saturday afternoon and spreading northward through Sunday due to some amount of elevated instability being possible. Expect a warm front to lift northward from the Coast Sunday night into Monday as the shortwave kicks eastward. Went a little warmer with high temperatures on Monday, but not as high as MEX MOS values. Depending on track of surface low, would not be surprised to see more widespread MaxTs in the mid-70s. PWATs in excess of 1.5 inches and favorable instability/shear will result in increased chances for thunderstorms and heavy rain before a cold front pushes east across the region. Some strong to severe storms or flooding concerns cannot be ruled out during the day on Monday, but for now the better focus for either threat looks to be to our north. Models indicate the main upper-level trough axis will still hold back to the north and west, so the cold front should once again stall out along the Gulf Coast with a chance for showers hanging in our southern Parishes and Counties into Tuesday. Over-running moisture will spread rain chances farther inland Tuesday into Wednesday, and possibly result in a little bit of wintry precipitation Wednesday night into Thursday.
