MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2240
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0511 PM CST WED DEC 26 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...NORTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA AND SOUTHEAST VIRGINIA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 262311Z - 270115Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT

SUMMARY...A BROKEN BAND OF LOW-TOPPED CONVECTION/TSTMS HAS FORMED IN
THE PAST HOUR ALONG COLD FRONT IN NORTHEAST NC. WERE THIS ACTIVITY
TO CONTINUE TO STRENGTHEN...THE STORMS COULD POSE A RISK FOR
MARGINALLY SVR HAIL...ISOLD DMGG WIND GUSTS...AND/OR A TORNADO
THROUGH EARLY TNGT.

DISCUSSION...A BROKEN BAND OF LOW-TOPPED SHOWERS AND STORMS HAS
FORMED IN THE PAST HOUR ALONG AND AHEAD OF SHALLOW COLD FRONT
PROGRESSING E ACROSS SE VA AND ERN NC. THE CONVECTION SHOULD
CONTINUE TO MOVE E WITH THE FRONT AS THE BOUNDARY ADVANCES EWD IN
ASSOCIATION WITH DEVELOPING SECONDARY CYCLONE NOW FORMING OVER THE
LWR CHESAPEAKE BAY /PER AREA SFC WIND AND PRESSURE CHANGE DATA/.
CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT ALSO LIKELY IS BEING ASSISTED BY THE LEADING
EDGE OF STRONGER MID-LVL COLD ADVECTION JUST NOW MOVING INTO REGION
IN ASSOCIATION WITH VORT LOBE ROTATING THROUGH BASE OF LARGER-SCALE
CNTRL APPALACHIANS TROUGH.

AREA WIND PROFILES SHOW STRONG...LARGELY UNIDIRECTIONAL DEEP SWLY
FLOW...WITH 700 MB SPEEDS ATTM AROUND 50 KTS. WIND PROFILES SHOULD
REMAIN FAVORABLE FOR SUSTAINED STORMS/SUPERCELLS OVER SE VA/NE NC
THROUGH MID EVE...ALTHOUGH SPEEDS SHOULD SOMEWHAT SLACKEN WITH THE
APPROACH OF THE TROUGH.

AT ANY RATE...IF THE UPDRAFTS NOW PRESENT ARE ABLE TO CONSOLIDATE
INTO SUSTAINED STORMS...SOME POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR MARGINALLY SVR
HAIL...LOCALLY DMGG WIND...AND PERHAPS A TORNADO. AREAL AND TEMPORAL
EXTENT OF THIS RISK WILL...HOWEVER...BE TEMPERED BY STRENGTH OF
SHEAR /ENTRAINMENT EFFECTS/...TIME OF DAY...AND FACT THAT AREA OVER
WHICH STORMS WILL BE MOVING HAS BEEN SOMEWHAT STABILIZED IN THE
LWR-LVLS BY PREVIOUS STORMS.

THE CONVECTION/STORMS WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED. PARTS OF NE NC
AND SE VA MAY REQUIRE A SMALL WW IF THE ACTIVITY SHOWS CONTINUOUS
SIGNS OF STRENGTHENING/ORGANIZATION.
