EF1 tornado, Topsey to Pidcoke, Texas, May 25, 2015

From Topsey to Pidcoke, this EF1 tornado ran 5.7 miles across Coryell County on May 25, 2015, touching down at 2:06 PM CDT and reaching 600 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $90,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

For several days, a stalled cold front, combined with abundant moisture from the Gulf of Mexico combined to produce widespread rain and thunderstorms in Texas. Several rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms occurred during a four day period, producing flash flooding, and numerous reports of large hail. Tornadoes affected areas in central Texas, from near Lampasas to a deadly tornado in Milam County.

A National Weather Service damage survey team found evidence of a nearly six mile tornado path across much of Coryell County and an extremely small part of Fort Hood. The tornado began near Farm to Market Road 580 where it crosses Table Rock Creek. From there, the tornado moved north, and eventually northeast before it dissipated just east of Farm to Market Road 116 near Shell Mountain Road. There were six homes which suffered damage, including one which had the roofing material removed. The most extensive damage was done to an historic cemetery, where all but one tree was damaged, uprooted, or both.
