EF1 tornado, South Gale to Ambrose, Texas, May 10, 2015

From South Gale to Ambrose, this EF1 tornado ran 2.6 miles across Grayson County on May 10, 2015, touching down at 4:08 PM CDT and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $50,000 of property damage.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

An active Spring weather pattern led to numerous severe thunderstorms, many of which produced tornadoes, across north Texas during Mother's Day Weekend. The prolonged period of strong to severe storms was made possible by a slow-moving upper level low pressure system which moved east from the Rockies through the Southern Plains. Activity began on Friday and continued through Mother's Day evening.

A National Weather Service damage survey team found evidence of EF-1 damage from a tornado in far northern Grayson County. The tornado began north of US 69 near Craft Road and moved northeastward into the Carpenter's Bluff area near the Red River. The damage in the area was mainly to trees. However, one church building near Carpenter's Bluff sustained roof damage. The tornado dissipated before reaching the Red River.
