An arctic cold front blasted across VT during the morning hours of February 7th sending temperatures plummeting through the teens into the single numbers by Saturday (2/7) evening on brisk northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts creating dangerous windchill temperatures of 10 to 25 below zero during the afternoon hours.
Although winds diminished somewhat on the night of the 7th, sub-zero temperatures still accounted for 15 to 30 below wind chills through midday on February 8th with daytime wind chills still 15 to 25 below zero.
This was the 3rd such cold spell within the past month that attributed to the Ice Over of Lake Champlain on February 13th, the first time since 2018.
Arctic high pressure crested across the region on the night of February 8th into the morning hours of February 9th. This allowed temperatures to radiate down to 5 to 20 below zero across VT.
